Sixteen-year-old Benny Solis won his third race of the season at Barber during the first SuperSport contest.

Honda’s Benny Solis captured his third win of the season at Barber Motorsports Park on Saturday. The 16-year-old snagged the lead from Ant-Racing Suzuki’s James Rispoli on Lap 9, never looking back until the checkers. Meanwhile, Elena Myers took her first podium of the season.

The SuperSport contest took center stage at Barber Motorsports Park with Rispoli getting an excellent start from pole position followed by Vesrah Suzuki’s Corey Alexander. Less than a minute into the race, however, LTD Yamaha teammates Tomas Puerta and David Gaviria collided with each other and went down, forcing the race to be red flagged. The race restarted with Rispoli up front once again with Myers, Solis and Travis Wyman following. Shortly after Wyman lost control of his Yamaha YZF-R6 but managed to recover at the back of the pack as Emmerson Connor crashed out on Lap 2. Puerta and Gaviria were both absent upon the restart.
Meanwhile Rispoli, Solis and Myers began separating themselves ahead of Ricky Parker, who was now more than four seconds behind Myers. The three riders were fighting tooth and nail as Myers briefly held the lead ahead of Solis and Rispoli on Lap 4. Just one lap later Rispoli was back up front ahead of Solis as the two started to stretch the gap ahead of Myers. Now running fourth, Jacob Morman is more than eight seconds

behind Myers with Parker, Ryan Kerr and Hayden Gillim in pursuit.
By Lap 9 Alexander had advanced up to 10th after jumping the start and receiving a five-second penalty. Solis then took over the lead from Rispoli as the top-three riders were posting lap times under the 1’32 mark. Once in the lead, Solis never backed off. The 16-year-old went on to claim his third win of the season by more than five seconds ahead of Rispoli.

“I felt a little more calm knowing [Puerta and Gaviria] were out,” said Solis. “I had a little less pressure on me, and I think that helped in the race. In the beginning, [Rispoli and Myers] were starting to break away a little, but after three laps of following I was able to pick up some lines, and after that I was able to get in front and break away a little bit.”

Myers obtained her first podium result of the season in third after Morman made up significant ground on her in the final lap to finish just 0.8 seconds shy of the podium.

“Today was a pretty crazy race,” Myers said. “I got a good start and led a few laps, then these two fast ones [Rispoli & Solis] came by me. I tried to stay with them but I didn’t really have the tires left to do it.”
