Honda Racings Ashley Fiolek claimed second overall at Hangtown with back to back second-place finishes behind Jessica Patterson.
Honda’s Ashley Fiolek repeated her 2010 performance at Red Bud by earning the double victory.

When Round 4 of the 2011 WMX Championship came into Red Bud over Fourth of July weekend, Honda’s Ashley Fiolek proved more than ready by capturing her second overall victory of the season. Winning both motos, Fiolek repeated her performance last year and extended her lead in the championship to eight points ahead of DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson. JP$ claimed second overall after finishing runner-up to Fiolek in both motos, with TLD Honda’s Tarah Gieger rounding out the podium for the day in third.
Fiolek darted into the lead at the start of the contest followed by Gieger, Patterson, Motorsports Kawasaki’s Vicki Golden, Fox Racing’s Jacqueline Strong, Kasie Creson and Pro Tech Coatings’ Jackie Ives. After crashing on the opening lap Scott USA’s Sara Price was out as Fiolek led Gieger by more than eight seconds. With lap times around just over two and a half minutes, Fiolek was able to gather an advantage ahead of the field while Patterson began to close on Gieger.

Jessica Patterson regained the championship lead with a perfect outing in Colorado.
DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jessica Patterson took runner-up to Fiolek in both motos at Red Bud.

Further back Rockstar Suzuki/Troy Lee Designs’ Sayaka Kaneshiro moved up to seventh ahead of Lindsey Palmer as Gieger remained just one second ahead of Patterson in second. By Lap 4 Fox Racing’s Marissa Markelon was up to 10th, but she was well off the pace of the leader as Fiolek was running more than 22 seconds ahead of fourth-place rider, Golden. Under continuous pressure from Patterson, Gieger eventually broke, allowing JP$ to get by for second. Despite being runner-up, however, Patterson faced an uphill battle as Fiolek has more than a 10-second advantage on her.
With the top-three riders almost a full minute ahead of the field, the white flag came out with Patterson unable to challenge Fiolek’s sizeable lead. The Honda rider scored her second win of the season by more than eight seconds ahead of Patterson. Gieger held on for third another 20 seconds back, with Golden and Strong rounding out the top-five finishers.
With rain threatening at the start of the second moto, Fiolek once again got the holeshot ahead of Patterson, Golden, Gieger, Kaneshiro, Markelon and Ives. The track had deep ruts formed by the earlier 250 and 450 motos, making conditions more difficult as the race wore on. Patterson kept Fiolek honest in the early laps as she shadowed her rear fender less than a second behind.

Vicki Golden was on pace for a podium but fell on the last lap of Moto 2 and finished 10th overall.
Vicki Golden had two top-five finishes to score fourth overall.

On Lap 2, Gieger pushed ahead of Golden for third while Fiolek maintained the lead ahead of JP$. Further behind them Markelon had moved up to fifth ahead of Kaneshiro while Strong made it around both Ives and Pearson for eighth. At this point Fiolek’s lead grew to more than two seconds ahead of Patterson.
In the end the day was a major success for Fiolek as she held on for the win in Moto 2. Just 1.3 seconds behind Fiolek at the finish line was Patterson, who couldn’t topple her rival. Fiolek increased her lead in the championship and now carries momentum as the series heads into its final half beginning at Spring Creek on July 16th.
