Following the ‘technical hold’ placed on it earlier this year for suspect valve springs, the 2011 ZX-10R gets an official recall from the NHTSA regarding its wiring harness configuration.
The NHTSA recall summary describes the safety concern, stating: “It is possible for a portion of the wiring harness to become pinched between the rear subframe and the rear fender or between the rear subfrrame and the bolt holding the seat cover. This can damage the harness and wiring and result in a short between wires and the frame or within wires, which could result in the engine stopping suddenly.”
When contacted, Kawasaki representatives note that there have been no recorded incidents of this issue occurring in the field or on a customer unit. The fix is a quality assurance measure investigated during testing for the 2012 model year and is being applied retroactively to existing 2011 units as a pre-emptive action.
Kawasaki dealers will repair the motorcycle free of charge. ZX-10R owners can contact Kawasaki at 1-866-802-9381 with questions or concerns.
Much-anticipated as the only completely redesigned Superbike in the 2011 model year lineup, the ZX-10R was notoriously placed on “technical hold” in December 2010. At issue were intake valve springs, which spurred Kawasaki to replace the camshaft, valve springs and spring retainers just as the new models were arriving at dealer sales floors.
