Honda’s Ashley Fiolek now leads the field by 30 points after snagging her third overall win of the season at Southwick.
The 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com WMX series returned after a long hiatus to some of the roughest conditions this season at Southwick, Massachusetts. Through it all American Honda’s Ashley Fiolek was declared the winner with 1-2 moto scores ahead of TLD Lucas Oil Honda’s Tarah Gieger. KTM rider Alexah Pearson rounded out the overall podium in third, earning her first top-three finish of the season. With only two rounds now remaining, Fiolek has established a 30-point lead in the series ahead of her rival, Jessica Patterson.
Fiolek had the lead during start the first moto ahead of Gieger, Jacqueline Strong, Pearson, Sayaka Kaneshiro and MotoUSA.com/Langston Motorsports Kawasaki’s Vicki Golden. Elizabeth Bash, Moto Concepts Yamaha’s Mariana Balbi and Kasie Creson all got off to bad starts as Fiolek was already more than three seconds ahead of Gieger. Meanwhile JP$ was in fifth, but a series of crashes left her languishing at the back of the field while Fiolek started running away with the race.
Conditions became extremely tough as the race progressed, creating slower laptimes. A major gap between Gieger and Strong developed as Pearson dropped behind Rock River Racing’s Marissa Markelon, Cyr Racing’s Marissa Markelon and Sarah Whitmore. On Lap 4 Whitmore moved ahead of Parizek for fifth. In the closing laps Fiolek completely checked out, taking the win more than a minute ahead of Gieger. Markelon grabbed third after passing Strong on the final lap as Whitmore earned fifth just behind.
In the second moto Patterson was up front early after a much better start ahead of Fiolek, Pearson, Whitmore, Kaneshiro and Gieger. Meanwhile Bash was outside the top-10 again and clearly struggling in the mud at Southwick, as was Balbi all the way back in 27th. Patterson already had an eight-second advantage over Fiolek, and Gieger was making progress by moving into fifth ahead of Kaneshiro. By Lap 3 Patterson had a 33-second lead, which only increased throughout the seven-lap race. In the end JP$ won by more than 58 seconds ahead of Fiolek, with Pearson, Whitmore and Gieger rounding out the top-five. Thanks to Fiolek’s strong performance in the first moto, however, she took bragging rights from Round 6 and increased her championship lead.
