The 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track Championship moved into Northwest territory over this past weekend at “The Rock”. On Sammy Halbert’s home turf, the local favorite stole the show Saturday night aboard his Kings Kustoms/Larry Zumbrun Racing Yamaha after winning his heat race, the Dash for Cash event and Grand National Singles main event. Winning the main by more than two seconds ahead of Roger Lake Racing/Blue Springs Harley-Davidson’s Jared Mees, Halbert took over the lead in the championship after gaining six points on his rivals through his fourth win of the season. Rookie of the Year candidate Brad Baker rounded out the GNC Singles podium in third, the 18-year-old crossing the line only 0.611 seconds behind Mees.

“I knew if I kept getting good starts and kept my focus, I could win this tonight,” said Halbert. “This is just great — I won my first national here, and this is my fourth win this year, [which is] more than I had in my whole career starting the year.”

Chris Carr, Johnny Lewis and Bryan Smith caused the main to be restarted after getting bunched together in the first lap. The race was then restarted with Halbert getting another solid jump into the lead until Chad Close’s fall halfway through brought out a second red flag. Through it all, however, Halbert kept his cool and when the race was picked up he led every lap until the checkers.
During only his second race back from having knee surgery Henry Wiles finished fourth. Wiles was followed by Joe Kopp at the checkers, the Washington native briefly returning to action from his semi-retired status.
In the Pro Singles main Weirbach Racing’s Gerit Callies snagged another victory this season by less than two-tenths of a second. Brian Bauman recorded second in the order as Michael Martin, the current leader in the Pro Singles Championship, finished third more than six seconds behind Bauman. Callies’ latest victory puts him 12 points behind the leader with seven rounds still remaining in the series.
