Our Memorable Motorcycles expert, Frank Melling also is the organizer of the British vintage motorcycle extravaganza known as Thundersprint. Melling began riding five decades ago and remains as much in love with motorcycles as when he drove his first bike into a cow shed wall aged ten. In the last 50 years, Melling has competed in every form of motorcycle sport and now declares himself to be too old to grow up and be sensible.

Can someone please find me one like this please
Long ago our contributor and his wife owned a beautiful
Honda CBX 6. Now, the search is on to find their lost love.

Okay. Play the music. “Take My Breath Away…”

“Top Gun” Frank Melling – somewhat less fat, bald and wrinkly than today but still several light years distant from Tom Cruise – has suggested to his new, sparkling wife that they should visit the Isle of Man for the TT races.

The new, shiny wife thinks that this would be a wonderful idea – and an even more wonderful thing if the trip were to be done on a truly memorable motorcycle.

So what bike do we take to the TT to impress said sparkling new wife and convince her that the opinions of her Mum, friends and colleagues about her new husband are misguided to say the least – and are, in fact, actually libelous and also technically inaccurate in that that her brand-new husband is not really the first son of Satan the Prince of Darkness?

Which one motorcycle in the whole world oozes style, sophistication and is truly “Top Gun” liquid nitrogen cool?

There was, and is, only one answer: the fabulous Honda CBX 6.

CBX girl
Struck by the absolute perfection that is the CBX, this gal won’t accept any substitute.

So, a 3,200 mile, silver CBX is sourced, polished to a mirror finish and covered with a dust sheet for the official unveiling.

With all the style of a Las Vegas magician, the dust sheet is whipped off and shiny, sparkling wife shrieks with delight and demands to be taken for ride. Three hours later, the happy couple arrive home and she professes the CBX 6 to be a thing of beauty and wonder.

The week at the TT is beyond wonderful and even the two days of pouring rain are not enough to get within a nautical mile of spoiling our fun.

Cue “Take My Breath Away” again…

The CBX comes home but sadly is used less and less with the pressures of work and the arrival of our new baby. But the killer punch comes when we launch the Thundersprint which takes every penny we have and can raise by selling everything we own – and borrowing to oblivion. In the battle for survival our beloved CBX has to be sold.

Then at last month’s Bikers Classics in Belgium, fate intervenes. Parked not 20 yards from our pitch in the paddock is the absolute twin sister of our bike. Carol – very much not new but still extremely sparkling – looks longingly, as do I.

“Take My Breath Away” for the third time.

In his hour of need, our man Melling desperately calls upon the MCUSA faithful for hot tips on an elusive Honda CBX 6.

Eventually, the lovely Dutch owner lets us sit on the CBX, we wipe the tears away, hear the wail of the magical six-cylinder engine and remember the 1991 TT.

“Take My Breath Away” four…

There can only be one solution: an appeal to Motorcycle USA readers.

Does anyone know of a really, really, REALLY nice CBX? Preferably a silver or red twin shocker but anything considered provided it is worthy of bringing back memories of our TT bike.
