Chris Fillmore won the final race of the season at New Jersey Motorsports Park, taking the championship by 29 points ahead of Steve Rapp.
Michigan racer Chris Fillmore scored his fifth victory in the 2011 XR1200 series on Sunday at New Jersey Motorsports Park. The Bruce Rossmeyers/Daytona Racing rider finished just 0.134 seconds ahead of Vance & Hines/Harley Davidson/J&P Cycles’ Michael Beck, officially giving Fillmore the 2011 XR1200 title. RMR/ Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing’s Kyle Wyman finished the event in third, giving him his third podium of the season more than 13 seconds behind Fillmore.
Fillmore got the holeshot followed by Tyler OHara, Beck, Wyman and Chase McFarland. Meanwhile 21-year-old Shane Narbonne, Gerry Signorelli and RMR Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing’s Michael Corbino were running sixth through eighth respectively while Michael Barned crashed out the race early on the opening lap. Corbino made a quick pass on Signorelli for seventh as Beck was shadowed by OHara up front. A lap later Signorelli had retaken seventh from Corbino. On Lap 2 Beck snagged second ahead of OHara as Steve Rapp broke into the top-10 following a bad start.
The top-three riders were separated by less than a second as Rapp advanced into ninth ahead of Michael Morgan. On Lap 4 Rapp continued to advance by moving into seventh ahead of Signorelli and Corbino. The following lap, OHara ripped second back from Beck as the two continued to fight for the runner-up position. On Lap 6 OHara was right on Fillmore’s rear wheel, but a mistake forced him back and gave the advantage to Beck. In the final laps Fillmore and Beck remained more than 10 seconds ahead of the pack as Thomas Montano crashed out.
Chris Fillmore: “What AMA Pro and Vance & Hines have done with this series gave guys like us — guys who haven’t really had a chance to develop a name — a place to go to develop our names and learn the tracks. It’s been great.”
Fillmore ultimately claimed the win and the championship, with Beck winning his battle with OHara for second. Wyman also capitalized on OHara’s mistake toward the end to snag the final podium spot, with OHara finishing just 0.296 seconds shy.
