making a significant and warm association to its historic roots in the Borgo Panigale area of Bologna. In an Italian territory known as “Motor Valley” and where high performance and racing runs through the veins of its passionate people, Ducati now underline their pride in being world ambassadors for the “Made in Italy” title by immortalizing their home town in the name of the new Superbike.”
Though no technical information was divulged, Ducati did mention it intends on using the Ducati 1199 Panigale to compete in the 2012 FIM Superstock Championship. Racers competing in the 2012 World Superbike class will have to use the 2012 1198 to compete on, albeit with tech support from Ducati. The 1199 Panigale will then make its debut in World Superbike in 2013. The two-stage introduction gives the Italian manufacturer ample time to develop the bike to meet the more open regulations of WSBK. Three-time World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss has been helping Ducati hone in the Panigale on the track with a short teaser video as evidence.
Assigning a name to its superbike instead of solely a number is a break from tradition for Ducati. And though we don’t know specifics of the bike, Ducati purists who have watched the Panigale video on YouTube are already bemoaning the absence of a dry clutch, trellis frame, underseat exhaust, and the use of the engine as a stressed member of the frame. Apparently, change is hard to swallow for some.
