The ulcers keep piling on for the warden of the MotoUSA asylum. With the inmates running rampant around the globe, Hutch has opted to get in on the madness more these days than in years past and is back in the saddle again.

This week’s MotoUSA Photo of the Week is a nostalgic look back in time. A snap shot of a life and lifestyle that many are a part of and only a few can comprehend. Back in 1973 cameras were manually operated and handheld. Instant cameras had little or no settings, and still photographers made due. In the winning picture from TiredVet, we see a classic memory captured on film (Then scanned for your viewing pleasure).

Sometimes a photograph is more than the sum of its parts. Here
we have a classic example of that rule. A nice bike, memorable
moment in time and decent composition. Consider that all pics
from that era were film and subject to being developed at the
local drugstore and you’re lucky a shot like this is even around.

We have a Moto Guzzi Eldorado positioned slightly off to the side with a nice perspective shot of the dirt street and the community of board shanty houses trailing off into the distance. This was a good photo three decades ago and is still good today. I chose this image for a couple of reasons. The least of which is the quality of the actual image. There are a number of photos that were in the running which have more vibrant color and arguably better composition. But this image grabs my attention. There is a historic feel to it regardless of anything else in the shot and for the photographer, this photo captures a memory of a time long since passed.

“One of my faves….My Moto Guzzi Eldorado in front of my mother-in-law’s house in Tijuana….the year was 1973….almost like another world!” – TiredVet.

The subject: The kid on the bike. Is a contrast to the back ground. He is clean cut, nicely dressed and siting aboard a good looking motorcycle. He’s surrounded by dirt roads, dilapidated fences and a countryside that is way rougher around the edges than he is. Look it over and there are surely even more cues you can pick up on than this.
So, for its historic, rustic feel and quality of composition, we anoint TiredVet the MotoUSA Photo of the Week for Sept 16, 2011.

Photo Tip: Make sure your photo tells a story that includes where you are and who was there with you. Simply putting his Guzzi in front of the house would have been an OK photo but by adding the kid it gives the image more substance. When you have an opportunity to take a photo, don’t be shy. Get in the shot or make sure your family and friends are in it. Thirty years from now it may be a memory that stirs your soul, like this one.
