Hilde is holding down the fort at MotoUSA’s Southern Oregon HQ. With world-class dirt bike and ATV trails just minutes away, the hardest part is getting him to focus on the keyboard. Two wheels or four, it doesn’t matter to our Off-Road Editor so long as it goes like hell in the dirt.

Broc Tickle, Cole Seely and Darryn Durham crashed only a few feet in front of the start gate as they tangled handlebars. As the pack sprinted ahead of the carnage, the fastest 250 qualifier, Blake Baggett, used his first gate pick to pull the holeshot in Moto 1with Dean Wilson and Tyla Rattray following suit. Mavin Musquin had his work cut out for him against the Monster PC Kawasaki team as he slotted into fourth.

Wilson made a clean inside pass on the opening lap and started pulling a slight advantage over his teammates. On Lap 4 it was Rattray’s turn and he moved into second for three trips around the high-speed Pala track before Baggett started making one of his trademark charges. That surge would carry him right up to the rear fender of Wilson who used his championship-winning confidence and lack of pressure to respond. Baggett pulled wheel-to-wheel, nearly making the pass around the inside of a right-hander with five laps to go, but his charge was once again thwarted and the Scotsman held onto the lead.

After the race the two riders came together and exchanged words. Baggett grabbed Wilson’s helmet and on the podium accused his teammate of dangerously cross-jumping, saying he’s going to “kill someone” by doing that. Like we’ve seen so many times this season, Kawasaki swept the podium. Baggett picked up two points on Rattray in his quest for the runner-up position for the year.

Tyla Rattray was third with his Monster PC Kawasaki teammates joining him on the podium.

Musquin was never able to get out of fourth place, but he was close to Rattray at the checkered flag. Gareth Swanepoel finished fifth, just in front of his DNA Shred Stix Yamaha teammate, Kyle Cunningham, who gave the fans a great battle in the final laps. Eli Tomac was the highest-ranking Honda in seventh.
