Eugene Laverty is trading in his Yamaha leathers after signing a two-year contract to ride for Aprilia in World Superbike starting in 2012. Speculation has been rampant as to where the talented rider would land until Aprilia made it official in the press announcement released today.

Laverty will join Aprilia’s current factory rider, five time World Champion Max Biaggi, competing on the RSV4 Factory superbike. Laverty tied for third in the final 2011 World Superbike standings with his new teammate Biaggi at 303 points.

Laverty had a strong rookie year in WSBK, winning the double at Monza while riding for the Yamaha factory squad. He made it to the podium six times total this season, including three second place finishes.

Laverty rewarded his new employers by going out and setting the fastest lap at the Portimao tests last week with a time of 1’42.80.
