Ryan Villopoto ended his 2011 season in style with a million-dollar paycheck after winning the Monster Energy Cup.

On a clear fall evening in Las Vegas, Nevada the inaugural running of the Monster Energy Cup debuted with Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto snatching the million-dollar payout. The 23-year-old had three perfect motos in which he led every lap ahead of the competition. Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey earned second in the contest with 3-2-2 scores, followed by Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe.

Moto 1

Villopoto kicked off the night by taking the holeshot in the first moto ahead of Pro Circuit Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ben Townley, KTM’s Mike Alessi, Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Brett Metcalfe and Dungey. Geico Honda’s Kevin Windham got off to a bad start outside the top-20 along with Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle and Josh Hansen, the latter suffering a first turn crash. RV was riding extremely aggressive during the opening lap and immediately opened a gap as Dungey passed Metcalfe and Alessi in a single jump to move up to third. By the end of Lap 5 RD5 was riding Townley’s rear wheel while Villopoto had more than a 10-second advantage on the field.

Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer and Honda’s Eli Tomac were running sixth and seventh respectively when Dungey started showing a wheel on Townley. With three laps left and RV set to win the first race of the night, the battle turned to Dungey and Townley. Despite being right behind Townley in every corner, the newly turned KTM rider showed a distinct lack of aggression by failing to make the pass to claim runner-up. In the end Villopoto put his million-dollar plan in motion with the first win of the evening more than 12 seconds ahead of Townley, with Dungey rounding out the podium. Metcalfe and Tomac concluded the top-five, with Alessi finishing more than 30 seconds behind Villopoto in sixth.

Moto 2

Villopoto moved one step closer to the grand prize after posting the holeshot again in Moto 2 ahead of Dungey. Following the top-two were Metcalfe, Tomac, Townley, Bell Helmets Yamaha’s Justin Brayton, Weimer, Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Martin Davalos, Musquin and MotoConcepts Yamaha’s Kyle Chisholm. Just after the opening lap Alessi had to pull off track due to a broken shift lever. Windham also continued having a difficult night after starting outside the top-10 again along with Tickle and Hansen. Townley quickly advanced into fourth ahead of Tomac, but the Honda rider refused to give in and answered back. Meanwhile RV was pulling a gap ahead of the pack again.

On Lap 5 Townley had a disappointing mechanical failure with his front wheel, forcing him out of the top-five. Davalos was putting in a consistent ride behind Weimer in eighth as Villopoto was absolutely crushing the competition up front. Despite making up time on RV near the end, Dungey never came within striking distance of the leader. Villopoto added another win to his scorecard while Dungey crossed the finish line more than six seconds behind. Once again Metcalfe earned a solid finish in third as Tomac and Brayton rounded out the top-five.

Moto 3

When the gates dropped on the final moto the odds were heavily in favor of Villopoto to claim his third straight holeshot of the night. It was Alessi, however, who shot around the first corner with the lead, but RV was quick to snatch the position away. Behind the two was Dungey, Metcalfe and Nick Wey. On the second lap Dungey grabbed second ahead of Alessi, but his move didn’t stick and Alessi eagerly reclaimed his position. Over the next few laps the battle between Alessi and Dungey intensified. A lap later Alessi made a tremendous mistake which forced him off track, losing two spots in the process.

The man of the night though was Villopoto as he created a gap ahead of the field for the third consecutive race. The 2011 Supercross and Motocross champ concluded his perfect season by lighting the candles in Las Vegas, adding one million dollars to his portfolio thanks to three extremely impressive performances. Dungey, Metcalfe, Wey and Davalos rounded out the top-five competitors.
