Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea dominated the final Superpole of the season at Portimao ahead of Carlos Checa.

In the final World Superbike qualifying session of 2011 Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea took the honors at Portimao circuit. The Irishman’s lap of 1’41.712 on Saturday gave him his second pole victory of the season after outpacing newly crowned 2011 WSB champ, Carlos Checa.

“To be honest, I’d much rather swap this pole position and the one at Magny-Cours for two good results tomorrow, but I’m still very happy with today,” Rea said. “I’m enjoying riding the bike so much right now and go out with a smile on my face in every session.”

Rounding out the front row were Yamaha’s Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri, the two teammates finishing 0.086 seconds from each other in third and fourth respectively on the grid.
Liberty Racing’s Sylvain Guintoli and Jakub Smrz secured second row starts for Sunday’s competition, with Smrz managing to be the final rider within a second of Rea. Meanwhile Kawasaki Racing’s Joan Lascorz earned the seventh-best lap more than half a second behind the Czech rider. Pata Aprilia’s Noriyuki Haga will start from the back of Row 2 after finishing last in the final superpole session of the day.
As he’s done so many times this season BMW Italia’s Aryton Badovini posted the best time for the German marque in ninth. Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes rounded out the top-10 times just 0.095 seconds behind the Italian, with BMW Motorrad’s Leon Haslam and Aprilia’s Leon Camier both making it on the third row.
Supersonic Racing’s Maxime Berger and Alstare Suzuki’s Michel Fabrizio failed to make it past the first superpole session. The duo will head a fourth row effort in Sunday’s races, as World Superbike rookie Davide Giugliano saw more improvement on Saturday by finishing 15th. It was a tough day for Aprilia’s Max Biaggi, who finished qualifying in 17th after failing to make the cut for Superpole. As a result the former champ will have to start from the fifth row, reducing his chances of salvaging a podium finish in the championship.
