The BMW S1000RR returns as Sportbike of the Year for 2011,
the German Superbike continues to dwarf its high-performance
rivals with a staggering 183 horsepower at the rear wheel. But
the Beemer is able to harness that raw power with sophisticated
electronic aids, ensuring its performance can be tapped.
The BMW S1000RR’s greatest achievement may be that it managed to exceed already high expectations when it debuted in 2010. The German superbike came onto the 1000cc scene with an Inline Four that absolutely smoked its rivals, cranking out more than 20 horsepower than its closest competitor. The Beemer also managed to sweep the Street and Track portions of our annual Superbike Shootout in its first attempt. It was a domineering performance that earned it Best Sportbike of 2010 honors.
A year later and the BMW returns as Best Sportbike of the year. Once again it took to honors in our 2011 Superbike Smackdown VIII Track and Street comparison reviews. Once again it produces insidious levels of horsepower, the 2011 model registering a staggering 183 ponies at the rear wheel on our in-house dyno. Once again it was 20 more than the nearest rival, a completely redesigned Kawasaki ZX-10R.
Power, agility and racetrack prowess are all hallmark traits of the Superbike class, and BMW has proven that it is the master with its S1000RR for the second year in a row. It offers class-leading performance in a smart package, with the latest electronics making its performance accessible to riders of various skill levels. Lost in the performance accolades is that at $13,800 the BMW remains quite competitive with the Japanese brands.
