Everything was going perfect until…
This happened. Good thing I was wearing Alpinestars premium Race Replica one-piece riding suit.
It doesn’t happen very often, but a few days ago I crashed. I binned our 2012 Honda CBR600RR at Chuckwalla Raceway with only 674 miles on the odometer. Yikes.
My plan was to mount some high grip tires and put in a day of riding, in stock form, at the racetrack, in order to ascertain what areas I could boost performance via aftermarket mods.
I went in the garage and found a set of brand new Dunlop D209 GP-A tires. I recalled these were the tires we ran a few years ago in the 2009 Daytona SportBike Comparison. It had been a while since I rode on Dunlops so I thought it would be a good chance to get re-acclimated.
Normally for a trackday riding on street bikes I don’t run tire warmers but based on our experience during the 2011 Supersport Shootout IX Track I knew the GP-As are more sensitive during warm-up than other brands. So to minimize the chance of cold tearing (condition when tire rubber tears due to cold track and/or carcass temperature paired with high load) it’s a good idea to get the tires hot before turning a wheel on track…
Long story short I crashed in my second session as I entered Turn 4 (just as I was releasing the front brake). I was in third gear and traveling about 65-70 mph when I hit the deck. After sliding and tumbling one time I got right up. I was upset but not hurt in the slightest. Props to the Chuckwalla track designers (plenty of run off room and no objects to ram) as well as premium Italian safety brand, Alpinestars.
Some of the crew at MotoUSA has taken a number of street bike track diggers in Astars gear and we’ve always come out unscathed. I was wearing the Alpinestars Racing Replica One-Piece Suit, Alpinestars Supertech R Boots and Alpinestars GP Pro Gloves. I was also wearing my all-time favorite lid, a Shoei X-Twelve B-Boz Helmet, but I didn’t hit my head on the ground (thank God).
Here is an analysis of how the gear held up:
The Race Replica’s thermoplastic shoulder cups disperse energy during impact and also provide additional abrasion protection when sliding across the pavement.
Both arms are constructed from seamless leather which allows for greater durability and resistance to tearing in a crash. The suit held together with no seperation.
The leather is between 1.2 and 1.4mm thick and provides a high-level of abrasion resistance. There were no holes in the leather and the rider received no abrasions in the crash.
The knee areas also feature thermoplastic cups for added impact and abrasion protection. The rider was completely unharmed in the crash.
The GP Pro Gloves held together and suffered no tears in the leather and could be safely worn another time.
The Supertech R boots are constructed from leather, suede and plastic. They held up great in the crash and can continue to be worn safely.
