After three years racing in the AMA Pro Flat Track Series, Johnny Lewis has a new career highlight after winning his first GNC Experts Main Event in Daytona Beach in the opening race Thursday night. (See Daytona Flat Track Thursday Results 2012). The Scott Powersports’ rider jumped to an early lead on his Honda CRF450R and never looked back, leading every lap of the 18-rider Main on his way to his first GNC Expert win. Lewis looked as if he was headed for the double in Race 2 after passing leader Jared Mees on the final lap. That is, until Mees cut underneath him on Turn 3, causing contact between the two which washed Lewis out. Regardless, Lewis looked strong all weekend long and currently sits third in the GNC Championship point standings with 40.
Lewis finished eighth in the 2011 AMA Pro Flat Track GNS and seventh in the GNC last year, highlighted by a second-place finish in Daytona and at Hagerstown Speedway. He’s also a former Supermoto X Fest Champion, Moto X Games veteran and earned his stripes competing in the AMA Supermoto Lites series.
Motorcycle USA caught up with Lewis the day after he won his first GNC Experts race, still wearing the elation of victory in his smile. We spent time talking about the range of emotions that came along with his first victory and asked him if it was extra special considering it happened at Daytona with its long history of racing. He said getting the win in Daytona was bittersweet because he dedicated the Short Track races to his friend and former KTM factory mechanic, Mark “Tex” Adams, before the first race. Adams, who moved on to wrenching for James Stewart and the JGR Yamaha Team, was killed in a freak accident January 26 when he was struck on the side of the road while trying to assist a stranded motorist.
Scott Powersports Honda rider Johnny Lewis got his first career GNC Experts victory in the first race of the AMA Pro Flat Track season on the Short Track in Daytona.
With one win under his belt, Lewis is a rider to watch in this year’s AMA Pro Flat Track season. Until the flat track paddock meets again in Springfield, Illinois, on May 26 for the Springfield TT, get your flat track fix via this video interview with the up-and-coming rider.
