Eli Tomac wins the 2012 Western Regional Supercross Championship.
Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac is the 2012 Western Regional Supercross Lites Champion after his win at Salt Lake City.

Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac prevailed in Saturday’s Supercross Lites battle in Salt Lake City, taking the win and the championship. The Honda rider was followed by Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Jason Anderson in second and teammate Martin Davalos in third.

Anderson scored the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot Award and led the pack during opening laps, but fell back under pressure from Tomac and Monster Pro Circut Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson. The Kawasaki rider lost hopes of regaining the championship points lead when he went down during the final laps. Tomac’s win tonight secures his position as the 2012 Western Regional Supercross Lites Champion.

“It was huge to close out the night with a race win and a championship,” said Tomac. “That was some good racing out there. Off the gate I got bumped around and was able to slowly pick guys off and try to pace. I did my best not to do anything stupid. That was the best way to do it.”

Anderson led for 10 laps during the Main, and was followed closely by Wilson and Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin during the opening laps. Musquin quickly fell back, ultimately finishing fifth, as Wilson and Tomac charged forward, holding the second and third positions by Lap 4. Anderson had a lead of over five seconds in Lap 6, but was unable to hold and slipped to second place with five laps to go. Tomac led all five of the final laps and clinched his season victory.

Wilson remained in contention until the last laps of the race when he went down and failed to finish the race. He remains second in championship points despite his misfortune in Salt Lake City.
Davalos kept a consistent pace which allowed him to capitalize on Wilson’s crash, advancing out of fourth place onto the podium, scoring his highest finish of the season. Geico Honda’s Will Hahn also grabbed his highest SX Lites finish of the season, coming in fourth.

Seatlle SX Lites winner Ryan Sipes failed to break the top-10, coming in 16th.

Wilson went down late in the race and was unable to finish.
Dean Wilson had a shot at winning the championship until he went down late in the race.
