Byron's sure to be hunched over a laptop after the checkers are flown, caught in his own little version of heaven. Whether on dirt, street or a combination of both, MotoUSA's newest addition knows the only thing better than actually riding is telling the story of how things went down.

Geico Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas claimed his first Daytona SportBike victory of 2012, seizing the checkers in Race 1 at Road Atlanta. The Colombian rider was joined on the podium by M4 Broaster Chicken Suzuki’s Dane Westby in second and YES Graves Yamaha’s Tommy Hayden in third.

Cardenas opened Race 1 in pole position ahead of Team Latus Motors Racing’s Jason DiSalvo. By the end of the opening lap, Riders Discount Suzuki’s Benny Solis and YES Yamah’s Hayden had bumped DiSalvo to fourth. Solis’ teammate Cory West got in the mix and bested JD after two laps taking fourth.

Going into Lap 3 DiSalvo, runner-up in the season opening Daytona 200, had to pit and fell to last place. From there he started a slow climb from the bottom. No such problems for Cardenas up front, who in the opening laps widened his lead over his nearest rival, Benny Solis, to more than two seconds, posting consistent lap times under 1:30. Hayden maintained his podium position valiantly until Lap 9 where he lost the third spot to a hard-charging Westby. Both rider stalked within half a second of Solis’ second spot, and by Lap 10 the close race shifted hands, and Wesby overtook Solis for second.

In the end, Cardenas took the checkers easily, the pole setter also leading the most laps for a maximum points haul at Road Atlanta. Westby stayed strong for second, while Hayden rallied in an extremely tight race for third with Solis. The eldest of the Hayden clan won the podium position on Lap 16, losing it again with two laps to go, and then regaining when Solis crashed on Lap 18.

Ducshop Racing’s Jake Zemke piloted the 848 to fourth, with Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West rounding out the top five. DiSalvo couldn’t regain decent position after his early pit, finishing in 17th. Daytona 200 winner Joey Pascarella wasn’t a factor in the podium fight, finishing in eighth in his first outing on the new SGA Racing/Yamaha Champions Riding School Yamaha YZF-R6.

Cardenas now holds the DSB points lead, the 2010 champ 10 points up on Pascarella. Westby’s solid second gets the M4 rider within striking distance in third, 13 points down. Tommy Hayden is fourth overall, with fellow AMA Pro vet Zemke fifth. DiSalvo’s Race 1 problems drop him to sixth in the standings.
