Graham Jarvis leads after two days at the 2012 Red Bull Romaniacs Enduro Rally.
Graham Jarvis leads the Red Bull Romaniacs after two days.

The 2012 Red Bull Romaniacs Enduro Rally, four grueling days of off-road motorcycle racing through the Romanian mountains, is not for the faint of heart…even if amateur competitors do occasionally stop to take a picture mid-race to commemorate the occasion. The Pros are all business though, negotiating fallen trees, rocks, mud, and steep hill climbs and descents. Two days into the 2012 rally, Husaberg Rider Graham Jarvis is holding steady at the top of the timesheet. The British rider kept in front of second place finisher Andreas Lettenbichler on both Day 1 and Day 2. KTM’s Chris Birch held third after Day 1 but fell to seventh on Day 2 and teammate Jonny Walker, winner of the recent Red Bull Hare Scramble at Erzberg, took fourth on Day 1 and third on Day 2.

Romaniacs action started with the usual Prologue qualification and Walker came away in first. Walker maintained his lead in Day 1 to the second checkpoint, but GPS navigation errors allowed other riders to close the gap. Jarvis excelled in the first technical sections and after passing Walker, put over 10 minutes between himself and the nearest competitor. Lettenbichler, similarly, gained time through technical sections and refrained from taking any chances on the course, earning second just ahead of former Romaniacs winner Birch. Of those that made the top five at the end of Day 1 if was Birch who had the most time to make-up after scoring eighth in the prologue and incurring a 5:30 penalty.

Jarvis came out on top on Day 2, as well, followed again by Lettenbichler in second. Walker jumped position and moved up to third while his teammate, Birch, fell to seventh as he continues to deal with a nagging foot injury. Husaberg rider Xavier Galindo took fourth and KTM rider Melcior Faja rounded out the top five.

The Romaniacs face incredibly difficult terrain during the four-day event.
