Johnny Walker (top) claimed the victory in the Red Bull Romaniacs Prolog main event. Andreas Lettenbichler (bottom) will be third off the starting line for Day 1 after finishing the Prolog on the podium.
The 2012 Red Bull Romaniacs kicked off with the torturous Prolog in the streets of Sibiu where extreme enduro fans can get an up-close view of the riders before they disappear into rugged wilderness for the next four days.
The qualifying stage for the 2012 Red Bull Romaniacs Hard Enduro took place in the streets of Sibiu, Romania. Pro and hobby riders alike took to the endurocross-style course in a seeding process for the four days of hell to follow. Heat racing format funneled the riders into a main event where they competed for the Prolog title and starting order on Day 1.
Fresh off his victory at the 2012 Erzberg Rodeo, Johnny Walker put on a repeat performance in the qualifying stage. The man from Great Britain took his KTM 2-stroke to the front of the pack with ease while Xavier Galindo and Andreas Lettenbichler followed in the main event. Galindo scored second aboard his Husaberg and Lettenbichler was third for the Husqvarna team, a much better result than his disqualification at Erzberg. Factory Husaberg pilot Graham Jarvis just missed the podium, but as the hottest extreme enduro rider this year he’s off to a good start with four grueling days awaiting. Besides, in an event like Romaniacs where navigation is key, being the lead rider out of the gate can be a bad thing.
Romania’s Erwin Kovacs and Paul Fratila were fifth and sixth, respectively, and will give the local spectators a good reason to cheer. The lone American, Kendall Norman, was 10th on his KTM.
