Tom Sykes is now tied for second place with Marco Melandri.
Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes took his fifth Superpole of the 2012 season at Misano on Saturday.

Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes earned his fifth World Superbike Superpole of 2012 at Misano Adriatico on Saturday. The three-session knock-out format was reduced to two sessions due to wet conditions at the Italian circuit, a drastic change from Friday’s bone-dry circumstances. Honda’s Jonathan Rea trailed the Kawasaki rider by 0.616 in second, followed by BMW Motorrad’s Ayrton Badovini in third. Althea Racing’s Davide Giugliano took the final spot on the front row with the fourth-fastest time.

Liberty Racing’s Jakub Smrz heads up the second row in fifth, followed by Badovini’s teammate Leon Haslam in sixth. Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty and Team Effenbert Liberty Racing’s Sylvain Guintoli round out Row 2 in seventh and eighth respectively.

Just before the session began, a thunderstorm hit the region and forced officials to declare the session wet. By the end of SP 1, rain continued to fall slightly but soon after the track dried. The unexpected conditions created difficulty for some riders.

Althea Racing’s Carlos Checa, the man who seemed poised to excel in Superpole after his near total domination of practice and qualifying sessions, failed to qualify for the second Superpole. The Spaniard fell to 16th place in SP 1 and will start from the back of Row 4 in Race 1 on Sunday. According to an Althea Racing PR, Checa and Giugliano waited for the track to dry before posting laps in SP 1, and while Giugliano was able to get his fast-lap in before time, Checa returned to the pit after a mis-understanding at the pit-wall a few minutes before the end of the session. He was unable to get back on track in time to record a fast-lap.

“Maybe we should have clarified our strategy beforehand,” said Checa. “There was a miscommunication. They gave me ‘box’ on the pitboard and I thought I needed to come in and change tyre while I should have stayed on track. It’s a shame because we had demonstrated that we had the potential to do well in today’s Superpole.”

BMW Motorrad’s Marco Melandri, suffered a similar fate as Checa, taking 13th in SP 1. Melandri will also start from the fourth row in Race 1. “We did not change anything on the bike, but in Superpole it was a completely different bike compared to free practice,” the Italian rider later explained. “We will try to understand why. I did not get a good feel for the bike, I could not go fast. We tried the qualifying tyre for safety to improve the lap time, but I was suffering with quite a bit of chattering with it.”

Points leader Max Biaggi of Aprilia Racing didn’t fare much better, missing SP 2 by just a fraction of a second in 10th place. The Roman is on the third row for Race 1 on Sunday.
