The BMW HP4 gets high-end parts, new wheels and a titanium exhaust – but the signature upgrade is BMW’s new Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) suspension system.
BMW Motorrad has unveiled its first four-cylinder HP model, the 2013 HP4. Based on the one of MotoUSA’s favorite sportbikes of all time, the S1000RR, the HP4 is a continuation of the HP model series founded in 2005 by the HP2 boxer enduro. Tipping the scales at five pounds less than the standard S100RR, this new model gets a host of upgraded parts, but most notable is the addition of Dynamic Damping Control (DDC) that BMW claims is a world first for production motorcycles.
The DDC system adapts the front and rear suspension to current road or track conditions by adjusting compression and rebound damping automatically in response to braking, acceleration and cornering forces. The basic settings of the DDC are tied to the “Rain”, “Sport”, “Race” and “Slick” power modes. Fine-tuning of the DDC is possible with a softer or tighter set-up via the instrument cluster menu system. Spring preload is still adjusted manually and optional shims are available to alter the rear ride height.
The ABS system has been refined with more of an emphasis on racetrack performance. As with the S1000RR, four modes are available for wet surfaces (“Rain”), the road (“Sport”), the racetrack with supersport tires (“Race”) and the racetrack with slicks (“Slick”). In the “Rain”, “Sport” and “Race” modes, the ABS works as an integrated system, automatically applying the rear brake when the front is activated to ensure stability and a shorter braking distance. A new IDM setting (developed from the German Superbike Championship) in the “Slick” mode gives more feedback while deactivating the rear wheel ABS functions.
A new 200/55-17 tire size is controlled by an optimized Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) system. When in “Slick” Mode the DTC can be adjusted on the fly using a handlebar-mounted paddle on the left-hand side. Fifteen levels of adjustment are available, from -7 to +7 with Level 0 being similar to the standard “Slick” mode on the S1000RR. Launch control has also been added to the DTC system.
Forged seven-spoke alloy wheels, and a lighter rear sprocket carrier reduce rotating mass from the HP4. A titanium exhaust featuring a interference pipe between cylinders two and three, a controlled acoustic valve and a closed-loop catalytic converter sheds an additional pounds. The new exhaust also optimizes the torque curve between 6000 and 9750 RPM. Unlike the S1000RR the HP4 provides full power in every mode.
The HP4 has a host of special features that set it apart from the standard S1000RR. A new instrument cluster has a newly designed dial face with an HP4 inscription and new menus for the DDC and DTC, and launch control. In the looks department the HP4 gets a special livery to designate its special model status along with a tinted windscreen and a dual-section engine spoiler.
An even more exclusive version of the HP4 is available with the Competition Package. Carbon fiber body parts, adjustable footpegs, folding brake and clutch levers and Racing Blue Metallic wheels are included in the package as well as a sponsor sticker kit.
