2013 Troy Lee Designs GP Air Gear Review

Justin Dawes | August 9, 2012
It’s hot out there, America, really hot. But does that mean we have to curtail our riding as the mercury rises beyond triple digits? This past week the temps have been over 100 degrees, but we have bikes to test, giving us no choice but to sweat it out. I run hot and any non-vented gear could have had me melting like an ice cube on asphalt. Luckily, TLD hooked me up

The 2013 Troy Lee Designs GP Air Jersey and Pants fit better and cool more when it gets hot at the local MX track.

with the 2013 GP Air Mirage Pant and GP Air Mirage Jersey to make my life a little more comfortable, even when it seemed that Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park might actually burst into flames.

The $48 GP Air Jersey is constructed from small-holed micromesh polyester making it one of the lightest on the market today. Fit and finish is the top of the line, as we have come to expect from Troy Lee Designs. Every seam and stitch of the nine panels that make up the top are perfect with zero snags. A ribbed V-neck is comprised of a stretch material for an excellent fit that doesn’t restrict or keep the heat trapped around your neck. The tapered and angled cuffs fit loosely and allow for a proper fit and seal without clinging to your sweaty skin. Once moving the amount of air that passes through the jersey is impressive and kept me cool as long as I was moving. The micromesh material is kind to the nipples, unlike some other highly vented jerseys out there. When ordering this jersey keep in mind that TLD jerseys tend to run a bit snugger than other brands and you might want to go up a size.

The same quality found in the jersey continues with the $138 GP Air Mirage Pant. The fit is tighter in the knee than previous TLD pants I have worn, and to me that is a good thing. Before there was too much room in the lower leg and knee area; now it takes some effort to get the pants around braces. I much prefer to have to wrestle the 2-way spandex and cowhide leather around my lower leg, as the feel to the bike has been improved greatly. These pants just fit better than any Troy Lee Designs pant I have ever worn, and they cool better than any before as well. The combination of 500-denier polyester mesh and 600-denier polyester lets in plenty of airflow to keep your lower extremities cool.

I’ve always been a fan of the quality of gear that Troy Lee Designs has put out there, but not always the fit. That is no longer the case as this the new GP Air series is the best fitting riding jersey and pant I have experienced from TLD. Throw in the benefit of the super light yet durable construction that keeps you cool as a cucumber in elevated temps and allows you to function when the heat is almost unbearable and you have my new favorite set of riding gear.
