Sammy Halbert took the GNC Expert Twins win at the Indy Mile.
Sammy Halbert on his way to a second GNC Expert Twins win this season, this time at the historic Indy Mile.

South East Harley’s “Slammin” Sammy Halbert took the win in the recent Indy Mile showdown at the Indiana State Fairground in Round 10 of the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by He bested Werner’s Brandon Robinson by just 0.026 seconds, Rogers Racing’s Jared Mees rounded out the podium a further 0.194 seconds behind.

The win marks Halbert’s second of the season in Grand National Championship Expert Twins, and his third overall for the season. The contest had to be restarted after an early crash by Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson and it appeared that Howerton Motorsports’ Bryan Smith would go on to take his second win of the season in the class, but he fell way back when his bike malfunctioned 12 laps in. Once Smith fell off the lead, Robinson took over with just three laps remaining but Halbert was tenacious and pushed hard on Lap 23, keeping Robinson at bay in the final straight away for the win.

“I didn’t see that one coming, luckily for me, the win fell in to my hands. The whole time I was just trying to figure out how to pass those fast Kawasakis,” Halbert said. “In the end I just pulled up behind Brandon (Robinson) trying to get a good draft and when I did I just hammered down and went with it. I was just hoping and praying on that last straight away that I could get through it and I did. It feels amazing; don’t count me out, ever.”

Foremost Insurance’s Henry Wiles came across the finish in fourth, followed by Screaming Eagle Harley-Davidson’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. in fifth and Dodge Bros Racing’s Brad Baker in sixth.

Despite his unusual crash, Johnson remains the points leader in Expert Twins, but holds just one point ahead of Mees. Halbert is third overall and Smith holds to fourth. In combined points, Mees remains steady in the lead with Halbert 21 points back in second and Johnson a further seven points back in third.

In AMA Pro Singles, Parkinson Brothers Racing’s Stephen Vanderkuur edged out Weirback Racing’s Dominic Colindres for the win. Double Dick Bandits’ Zakk Palmer earned a podium finish in third.

“It was an awesome race, I knew I had to get a good restart and I did,” Vanderkuur said. “I knew there would be a bunch of passing and that I was going to have my work cut out. It was a toss-up and I just went for it. I gave it my all and I’m just so excited.”

Colindres came off the start with an early lead, but five laps in was pressured by a number of riders including Vanderkuur, Palmer and Montgomeryville Cycle Center’s Jake Shoemaker. The battle continued until the final lap when Vanderkuur was able to pull away for a victory by just 0.057 seconds.

Shoemaker finished the day in fourth, followed by High Dairy Stores’ Jason Isennock in fifth and 5 Star Steel & Fabrication’s Ryan wells in sixth. Aria Helmets’ Jake Cunningham took seventh and LaBelle Racing’s Michael LaBelle earned eighth.

The win moved Vanderkuur to first in Pro Singles points, two ahead of Wells. Shoemaker is third overall andn Isennock sits in fourth.
