Dani Pedrosa (26) and Jorge Lorenzo (99) took part in a two-day private testing session at Aragon that included the Repsol, Yamaha Factory and LCR Honda teams.

Repsol Honda, Yamaha Factory Racing and LCR Honda recently wrapped up a private, two-day testing session at the Aragon circuit in Spain. Repsol’s Dani Pedrosa ended the first day as the fastest rider and Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo took the top time on day two. Riders also got the chance to continue testing newly developed Bridgestone tires made of hard compound rubber.

On day one, Pedrosa set his sights on dialing-in suspension and electronics on the RC213V to gain better rear traction and improve engine delivery. Day two, the Spaniard tested a new exhaust and a modified rear shock to increase grip. Filling in for the injured Casey Stoner, Honda’s Jonathan Rea continued to improve lap times as he becomes more familiar with the powerful MotoGP bike. Through both days, Rea clocked in fifth-fastest out of five riders, but by day two had moved to within two seconds of the top time.

“I’m happy with the test we did here in Aragon,” said Rea. “Now we’re not looking at the lap times so much, but the gap to the front which is decreasing every test, so I’m happy with that. Yesterday we did a lot of work with the base setting and we confirmed that this morning. I’m still not completely happy finishing the corner, but this afternoon I did a long run and my fastest lap came at the end, so I need to push these tires much harder and it’s a question of trust.”

In the Yamaha camp, Lorenzo tested chassis settings and two different engine specifications and logged 141 laps over the two days. His teammate Ben Spies continued to try and improve the base settings on his YZR-M1 as he fights to earn better race results through the remainder of the season. Both riders ended the two day session with a simulated race run.

“Today was a very long day, we made a race simulation at the end of the session so I feel very tired but it was necessary to see the performance of the rear tire,” said Lorenzo. “In general we leave here with happiness and confidence as we’ve been one second faster than last time. We need to try and improve consistency over race distance here.”

“We worked on some different fork and shock settings and a little bit of electronics but nothing major,” said Spies, who had a brief testing session at Brno after the previous round, but logged a whopping 171 laps at Aragon. “We were mainly fine-tuning the bike and the results seem good. I’m positive for the rest of the year. The package we have now was good over the race simulation so I’m optimistic for the race.”

Rookie Stefan Bradl, the lone satellite rider to participate in testing, was focused on finding the proper race set-up for the circuit and solving the rear grip issues he’s recently experienced.

The next round, set for September 16, 2012, takes riders to the Misano World Circuit and following that, on September 30, 2012, they will head back in Spain to battle it out at Aragon.
