Cameron Beaubier 6 pulled a final lap pass by Martin Cardenas 36 for the Daytona SportBike Race 1 win.
Cameron Beaubier took the Daytona SportBike Race 1 win at New Jersey in dramatic fashion ahead of Martin Cardenas.

Yamaha Extended Service’s Cameron Beaubier fought tooth and nail for his AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 1 win at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Competition out front was fierce among seven or more riders for the majority of the contest and the Yamaha ace beat out current points leader Martin Cardenas of Geico Suzuki by just 0.022 seconds. M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby rounded out the podium.

Race 1 was initially delayed after a crash, two laps into the contest, which forced a red flag and restart. Once on the track Cardenas ran to the front, but had Beaubier, Team Latus Motors Jason DiSalvo, Beaubier’s teammate Tommy Hayden and Meen Motorsports’ Bobby Fong right on his rear tire. Positions changed hands in every lap, with Westby, Fong, Beaubier and Cardenas trading places in the lead. With seven laps remaining, Cardenas regained the front while Beaubier and Westby duked it out for second. The three began to create a small gap on Fong, who was in fourth, and by the last lap it was anyone’s guess who would take the win of the three front runners. Beaubier pulled off a pass just before the finish line and the Colombian rider had to settle for second.

“I slotted into third the last few laps,” said Beaubier. “I saw what Westby and Cardenas were doing and I was able to make my moves. I was a little out of my rhythm and I would have liked to have made my moves earlier but there was no way I was getting away from these guys. I tried to conserve my tires and wait until the end.”

Behind Fong was Hayden, in fifth with DiSalvo over seven seconds back in sixth.’s Tommy Aquino put forth a valiant effort, contending in the top five for the much of the first half of the race, but by the end had slipped back to seventh. RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne scored eighth with his teammate JD Beach and Full Tuck Racing’s Aaron Gobert taking ninth and 10th respectively.
