Geico Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas pulled out a come-from-behind win in AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 2 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. M4 Suzuki’s Dane Westby took second with Meen Motorsports’ Bobby Fong rounding out the podium. Wesby and Fong came into the final lap running in first and second, but Cardenas made a push and got by both riders just before the finish.

A red flag delayed Race 2 after an incident took out Yamaha Extended Service’s Cameron Beaubier, Team Latus Motors Jason DiSalvo and Beaubier’s teammate Tommy Hayden. Hayden hit a wet spot and highsided and Beaubier crashed out as well. After the restart, Cardenas took to the front and held off ferocious pressure from Fong and’s Tommy Aquino. Westby was on the charge though, weaving through the pack from outside the top five and soon had Cardenas in his sights. The Colombian couldn’t hold Westby back and with five laps to go he took the lead. Cardenas slipped to third, but the race was so tight he was less than half a second off the lead. He found a line past both riders and posted his fastest time in the final lap of the race.

“The bike worked awesome all weekend. I led for about ten or twelve laps and I knew Bobby was right behind me,” Cardenas said. “Dane passed me and so did Bobby and they did some good laps. I thought about throwing in the towel but I made one more run. I got a good drive out of the last corner and drafted them on the front straight. I knew all three of us could win. The last few races I was close, so I am glad today worked out for me.”

Aquino came away in fourth, followed by Road Race Factory’s Jake Gagne. Riders Discount Vesrah Suzuki’s Cory West took sixth and Ducshop Racing’s Jake Zemke held to seventh. Gagne’s teammate JD Beach finished in eighth while’s David Gaviria and Team Beck Racing’s Michael Beck scored ninth and 10th respectively.

Cardenas continues to hold a commanding points lead over Westby. Beaubier holds to third with Hayden just 14 points back in fourth. DiSalvo held on to fifth overall but is only six points ahead of Beach in sixth.
