Jules Cluzel posted the top time in World Supersport qualifying.

PTR Honda’s Jules Cluzel took the World Supersport win in Portimao. The Honda rider battled down to the final laps with Kawasaki Lorenzini’s Kenan Sofuoglu and Kawasaki Intermoto Step’s Fabien Foret, trading positions a number of times out front before the end. Sofuoglu made a final lap push and finished in second ahead of Foret. The Turkish rider’s finish was enough to confirm him as the 2012 World Supersport title winner.

“We knew that we did not have to come to Portugal to win the race to win the title,” said Sofuoglu. “We had a few problems with set-up yesterday but we were in good shape today and I could take the lead. I made some mistakes and dropped back. I knew I only had to finish fourth but in the last couple of laps I thought I would try to take a podium so I finished second. Sometimes in the race I was thinking that I was already going to be World Champion, so I was asking myself why I had to take more risk, so I was careful, especially on the last lap not to attack Cluzel in the lead. It was great to win the title with Kawasaki but it has not been an easy year for us. I have had some problems with my knee injury but we won the title with one race to spare and I am very happy to have done it with Kawasaki.”

Ten Kate Honda’s Broc Parkes came off the start and held the lead through the opening laps, but slipped in position as Sofuoglu pressed forward. The Turkish rider had recovered from sixth early on to take the lead by Lap 5, where he remained for the next four laps. Parkes didn’t give up though, and was able to briefly regain the front mid-race. Meanwhile, Cluzel was moving up the ranks and pushing hard for the lead, which he took on Lap 12. The French rider faced challenges from Sofuoglu and Foret through the final laps, but was able to hold steady and claim his third victory of the season.

Parkes ended the day in fourth, followed by Bogdanka PTR’s Sam Lowes in fifth. Sofuoglu’s teammate Sheridan Morais finished in sixth and MSD R-N Racing Team India’s Dan Linfoot took seventh. Power Team by Suriano’s Alex Baldolini came across the finish in eighth, with Cluzel’s PTR teammates Ronan Quarmby in ninth and Mathew Scholtz in 10th.

Sofuoglu now has three World Supersport titles to his credit. Cluzel trails by 33 and would be unable to catch the Turkish rider in the final round since just 25 points are at stake for a win. Cluzel finishes his rookie season in second overall, followed by Foret in third and Lowes in fourth.
