Jared Mees won the 2012 AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com and Lucas Oil title in the final round at the Pomona Half-Mile.
Screaming Eagle Harley-Davidson’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. took a decisive victory in the final round of the 2012 AMA Pro Flat Track Finals at the Pomona Half-Mile in Southern California, beating Dodge Bros Racing’s Brad Baker by over eight seconds. Crosley Radio’s Bryan Smith rounded out the podium a further 0.144 seconds back.
But the big winner of the day was Rogers Racing’s Jared Mees, the eighth-place finisher, who captured the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by Motorcycle-Superstore.com title, earning enough points to remain well ahead of his closest competitor, South East Harley’s Sammy Halbert.
“The feeling hasn’t really sunk in yet,” said Mees. “So much hard work and dedication has gone in to this season and it all paid off. I kind of knew where I was at the whole way and was able to bring it home. I really have to thank my team and sponsors for all of their support this year; this was a great team effort.”
Coolbeth Jr. took the lead early on and went nearly uncontested as he proceeded to build a significant gap on the field, putting forth one of his best performances of the year.
“It takes a team to make this happen,” said Coolbeth Jr. “I’m not going to take all of the credit. Next season we just have to train hard and stay healthy and we’ll be alright. We’re going to keep our heads held high and give these boys a run for the championship next year.”
Smith, who started from 14th on the grid, made up tremendous ground as he battled his way through the pack to go head-to-head with Baker. The two riders kept in close competition for much of the race, with Baker gaining a slight advantage to beat Smith to the line. Memphis Shades’ Robert Pearson followed over five seconds behind in fourth, with USC Kawasaki’s JD Beach trailing in fifth. Goodwin Racing’s Steven Bonsey was just a fraction of a second behind Beach in sixth with Foremost Insurance’s Henry Wiles close behind in seventh. Mees finished eighth while Werner’s Brandon Robinson and Beach’s teammate, Jethro Halbert, took ninth and 10th respectively.
Despite winning only one race, Mees’ consistent performance over the course of the season gave him enough combined points to best Halbert by 13. Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson took third and Smith ended the year in fourth.
