Sammy Halbert on the way to his third Expert Twins win of the season in Santa Rosa.
Sammy Halbert earned his third Expert Twins win of the season in Santa Rosa and moved to second in points.

South East Harley’s Sammy Halbert took his third GNC Expert Twins race win of the season in the AMA Pro Harley-Davidson Insurance Grand National Championship presented by flat track race at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa. Rogers Racing’s Jared Mees came back from 13th early in the race to finish in second, followed by Crosley Radio’s Bryan Smith in third.

Smith and the Kawi looked strong right from the beginning, taking the holeshot and opening a gap to almost five seconds. By mid-race though, Halbert began his charge on the Kawasaki rider, chipping away at his advantage until Lap 20 when he finally made the move to the front.

“In the beginning, I was playing cat and mouse with Bryan (Smith),” said Halbert. “Once I passed him, I just kept looking back and saw the guys catching me but I adapted and overcame it. It was a great win. I loved coming out here to Santa Rosa and really want to thank all the great fans. I also want to thank my mom, dad, girlfriend and all of my sponsors.”

Mees was on a mission of his own after a tough start to the event, getting past Smith late in the race and building a gap of over two seconds to earn his fifth podium finish of the season in the Twins class. Zanotti Racing’s Jake Johnson almost pipped Smith at the finish line, Smith beating Jake to the line by a meager 0.064 seconds with Eaken Racing’s Robert Pearson following close behind in fifth. Foremost Insurance’s Henry Wiles finished the day in sixth, with Dodge Bros Racing’s Brad Baker and Sreaming Eagle Harley-Davidson’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. capturing seventh and eighth respectively.

Johnson continues to lead the Expert Twins in points, despite the fact that he’s yet to earn a race win in the class. Halbert and Smith are close behind though, both mathematically tied at 145, just nine points off Johnson’s lead. Halbert has the advantage and sits second thanks to his win in Santa Rosa. Mees is within striking distance of the top spot as well, trailing Johnson by 13 points in fourth.

AMA Pro Pro Singles

Parkinson Brothers Racing’s Stephen Vanderkuur took home the AMA Pro Pro Single win in dominant fashion, coming in over nine seconds ahead of second-place finisher Rodney Spencer Jr. of 831 Pinnit. Diesel Minnesota’s Cole Anderson rounded out the podium. Vanderkuur opened the contest in pole position, got to the front early and was uncatchable from early on in the race.

“I was just riding my own race,” said Vanderkuur. “I knew I had to get ahead early and I did just that. This is a big accomplishment for my team as far as the point standings go. I have to thank my team and sponsors for all their support, without them I would not be here. I also want to give a shout-out to the great fans here in California.”

Anderson had to earn his place on the podium, facing intense challenges from Montgomeryville Cycle Center’s Jake Shoemaker, who finished a mere 0.026-seconds back in fourth. Weirbach Racing’s Dominic Colindres crossed the line fifth, followed by Baywide Glass’ Ryan Foster in sixth. Kirland Racing’s Wyatt Maguire took seventh and DFW Honda’s Shayna Texter ended the day in eighth.

Vanderkuur remains the points leader, having extended his advantage to 11 over Shoemaker. Highs Dairy Stores’ Jason Isennock holds to third overall despite taking a DNF for the contest in Santa Rosa. Colindres moved up to fourth and is now mathematically tied with 5 Star Steel & Fabrication’s Ryan Wells.
