But I’ve been known to wear out a pair of Chuck Taylor’s or two as well. And when a pair of TCX X-Street Waterproof Shoes showed up in my office, I couldn’t help but think about the iconic American sneaker when checking out these motorcycle riding shoes.

thick that they weren’t immediately comfortable. A mesh liner inside the shoe around the ankle adds a thin level of padding which increases the comfort level as well while the insole is made from an antibacterial, moisture-wicking fabric. The X-Street’s come up right above the ankle and I thought they might be stiff straight out of the box but the leather is pliable so that wasn’t the case.
The heel is reinforced with a thick layer of leather and the ankles have a touch of armor but protection is nominal. A slip-on shifting pad was included that wraps around the shoe but it easily gets forgotten in the haste of getting ready. It would have been more convenient and beneficial if the toes were reinforced in the shifting area from the get-go. If you look hard you can see where the shift lever contacts the shoe but it is no worse for wear. We do like the great feel with the clutch lever we get from the shoes, though, the leather allowing for a solid point of contact.
The TXC X-Streets have proven to be a versatile shoe. They are comfortable on and off the bike which helps when you travel as much as we do. On a recent trip, instead of having to pack an extra set of space-eating motorcycle boots to ride in, the X-Street Shoes are comfortable enough that they were the only pair of footwear we brought. The laces made it quick and easy to slip them off going through security too, and they don’t wear your feet out walking around in them all day.
The full-grain leather uppers do have a waterproof membrane over them so the shoes don’t breathe the greatest. The sole was a bit slippery at first which I remedied by dragging my feet on the asphalt, taking off the slick layer from the fresh rubber, kind of like getting some rubber down on a fresh track.
We found the TXC X-Street Waterproof Shoes to be a solid all-purpose riding shoe. We dig the distressed look and the vintage sneaker vibe that even extends to the rubber sole and appreciate how comfortable they are, requiring little break-in time. We’ll trade off a little breathability for their waterproof attributes any day. Granted, there’s not much on the protection side, but from the ankle down they offer respectable support. At $139.99, they’re a fresh alternative to the standard biker boot and have earned their place in our gear bag this summer.
