mid-range tourer, dubbed the Hyperstrada. This full range of Hypers get redesigned, sleek and stylish bodywork along with a new powerplant that should bring the sometimes-ignored model back into the limelight.
Brand new from tip to tail, the new Hypermotard and ‘Strada gets an 821cc Testastretta 11º engine that is claimed to pump out 110 hp and 65.8 lb-ft. of torque. That is 20 more ponies than the Desmodue mill from the previous version. A claimed new Trellis frame is wrapped with minimal bodywork that maintains the essential supermoto style, but also more closely resembles the looks of the Multistrada. All three iterations of the 2013 Hypermotard get the Ducati Safety Pack that features 3-level ABS, 8-level Ducati Traction Control and an integrated Riding Mode.
One criticism of the original Hypermotard was the lack of range offered by its diminutive 3.3-gallon fuel tank. Ducati has increased fuel capacity by nine-tenths of a gallon while keeping the slim profile that is a hallmark of the Hypermotard. Service intervals have also been increased for valve adjustments to 18,600 miles, the highest interval for a Ducati.
The $11,995 base model 2013 Hypermotard features a 43mm Kayaba upside-down fork offering 6.7 inches of travel. Out back an aluminum, single-sided swingarm is mated to a Sachs shock that is preload and rebound adjustable and moves through 5.9 inches of travel. Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires are wrapped around10-spoke 1199 Panigale-style cast aluminum wheels.
At $14,695 the 2013 Hypermotard SP gets the full-performance treatment for the most demanding Ducatisti. To align with the competitive image of the SP designation, the standard riding modes (Sport, Touring and Urban) are replaced with Race, Sport and Wet. A fully adjustable Marzocchi fork and an Ohlins rear shock increase wheel travel and give the SP a true supermotard stance while increasing ground clearance. Pirelli Supercorsa SP tires are mounted to Marchesini forged aluminum Panigale S-type three-spoke wheels for excellent grip and lower unsprung weight. Additional high spec components include a radial front master cylinder, carbon fiber guards and covers, and a specially textured and stitched seat. The Hypermotard SP weighs in at 377 pounds dry, a total reduction of 8.8 pounds from the standard model.
The $13,295 2013 Ducati Hyperstrada is a new direction for the Hypermotard, offering a crossover between the worlds of motard and touring. Decked-out with 50 liters of side luggage, a center stand and a touring windscreen, the Strada model looks to be an excellent option for Multistrada 1200 fans that find the power, size or price tag intimidating. The rider compartment of the Hyperstrada has been tailored for long journeys with 20mm taller handlebars, a wider and thicker seat and passenger grab handles. Two 12V auxiliary power outlets provide power for GPS units and heated vests. The suspension is also revived for touring duty with a shorter 5.9-inch stroke at both ends from the KYB fork and Sachs shock. Panigale-style 10-spoke wheels come wrapped with Pirelli Scorpion Trail tires to complete the package that weighs in at 399 pounds.
