Vega Helmets will recall more than 30,000 of its XTS half helmets for not meeting national safety standards. The recall campaign, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects XTS helmets sized L, XL and XXL manufactured from May 2011 through October 2012.

The recall was initiated after four XL-sized Vega XTS helmets, tested by Southwest Research Institute, failed to meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (FMVSS 218 is commonly known as the DOT standard). Notified of the failed test, Vega identified the problem as changes to the EPS and shell configuration which started in May 2011.

The design fault may or may not meet DOT standard compliance in three XTS helmet sizes: L, XL and XXL. A letter written by Vega’s legal counsel and filed in the NHTSA recall documentation states that: “Because Vega cannot be sure which L, XL, and XXL Vega XTS model motorcycle helmets manufactured from May 2011 to October 2012 comply with S5.1 of FMVSS 218, it has decided to voluntarily recall all of those helmets.”

A total of 30,546 units are under recall. Vega will provide the owners of the recalled helmets with either a replacement XTS helmet that meets DOT standard, or another helmet model of equal or lesser value.

Vega will notify dealers that have purchased the suspect helmets. Lacking the contact information of helmet purchasers, the company will issue public notices of the recall. The recall is slated to begin in late January 2013.

XTS owners can get more information by contacting Vega at 1-425-656-0683.

Vega Helmets is based out of Tukwila, Washington. It imports helmets made by the Soaring Corporation of China.
