The ulcers keep piling on for the warden of the MotoUSA asylum. With the inmates running rampant around the globe, Hutch has opted to get in on the madness more these days than in years past and is back in the saddle again.

Beau Baron took the overall SXS Pro Production class win at Canyon MX.

The first race of the 2013 WORCS UTV racing season is in the record books and H&M Motorsports Polaris driver Beau Baron took the overall of the SXS Pro Production class event. DragonFire Racing’s Ken Benson drove his Polaris RZR XP 900 to a gritty runner-up position and Greg Row rounded out the podium.

Conditions were made extremely difficult as a winter storm arrived in Arizona, turning the dry, rocky desert into a mud bog. Saturday afternoon’s quagmire conditions forced WORCS officials to shorten the course by removing sections of the MX-track infield to offset the rising waters as well as reduce the off-road portion to keep competitors safe from the elements.

When the race finally got underway, Baron made his way to an early lead, leaving the rest of the field to battle for the runner-up spot. Eventual second-place finisher Ken Benson found himself in 10th place at the end of the first lap but he recovered from the poor start and drove his Polaris XP to a podium finish. Greg Row rounded out the podium, giving Polaris a clean sweep in round one.

If we didn’t convey the deplorable conditions these drivers were forced to compete in, then we haven’t done a good job. The track was beyond slippery. The desert was treacherous and the rain/mud combo made for reduced visibility for all the competitors. But that’s what makes racing fun, right? Any rider will tell you that the battle versus the elements, whether its heat, cold, rain or snow makes for some great racing.

Baron leaves Arizona with the points lead but Benson is hot on his heels. After the race, the DragonFire driver was taken to the local ER to remove gobs of mud and goo from underneath his eyelids. It appears everything will be OK for the DFR ace and he is expected to be ready to battle for the win again at the next race.

Round 2 of the WORCS series will take place on Feb. 8 in Primm, Nevada and if you haven’t watched a WORCS race, this would be a perfect time to check it out. Or, if you think you have what it takes to compete against the best off-road riders and drivers on the West Coast then come on out and join in the fun yourself.

Check the official WORCS website for results and info from the ATV and Motorcycle races.
