Byron's sure to be hunched over a laptop after the checkers are flown, caught in his own little version of heaven. Whether on dirt, street or a combination of both, MotoUSA's newest addition knows the only thing better than actually riding is telling the story of how things went down.

Michel Fabrizio of Red Devils Roma posted the top time in World Superbike qualifying practice at Phillip Island, barely edging out Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty in the final minutes of the session. BMW Motorrad GoldBet’s Marco Melandri finished third, a fraction of a second adrift of Laverty, and was followed by FIXI Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier in fourth. Melandri’s teammate, Chaz Davies, rounded out the top-five.

While Fabrizio was pleased with his performance, he worries about maintaining speed through the race distance because of issues with tire grip. He’s also dealing with some lingering pain following a strange incident during pre-season testing when a sea gull hit his arm while turning laps.

“We are working very well,” said Fabrizio. “Yet I am not fully satisfied because in long distances the tires do not ensure the right grip we are looking for. We are still missing five more laps and if tomorrow we can find the right setting then we will be ready for the races. In the afternoon the weather conditions were more difficult than in the morning, because I can feel the changes in wind direction. Also on Monday during the practices a seagull hit my arm it’s still very painful. I can say, however, that I am satisfied and tomorrow we planned to make some small changes that should allow us to improve

Pata Honda’s Leon Haslam took sixth, with Kawaski’s Tom Sykes close behind in seventh. Althea Racing’s Davide Giugliano posted the eighth-fastest time, with Laverty’s teammate, Sylvain Guintoli in ninth and Haslam’s teammate, Jonathan Rea, placing 10th. Gaps between lap times were minuscule among the top-13 riders, all coming in within one second of Fabrizio’s best effort.

The Red Devils rider set the pace earlier during the first free practice session as well, in both cases beating the lap record set by Max Biaggi in 2012. A number of riders went into the gravel during proceedings, including Davies, Melandri, Giugliano and Camier’s teammate, Jules Cluzel, but luckily there were no major incidents during the session.
