Team Ducati Alstare’s Carlos Checa will lead the way on Sunday’s 2013 World Superbike season opener at Phillip Island. The Spaniard earned pole position with a late session lap time of 1’30.234, just a fraction of a second better than Aprilia Racing’s Eugene Laverty, who starts from second. Red Devils Roma’s Michel Fabrizio maintained the quick pace he found during earlier qualifying practices and will round out the front row on race day.

Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tom Sykes appeared to be on track for yet another career pole position, but fell to fourth as others improved their pace. BMW Motorrad GoldBet’s Marco Melandri trails Sykes in fifth, followed by Laverty’s teammate, Sylvain Guintoli, in sixth. Heading up the third row is FIXI Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier, joined by Pata Honda duo Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea in eighth and ninth respectively.

In Superpole 1, MR-Racing’s Max Neukirchner joined Jamie Stauffer of Team Honda Racing and Ivan Clementi of HTM Racing in the bottom three, failing to advance on. Sykes earned top honors in that round, and then in Superpole 2 fell to the runner-up position behind Laverty. Althea Racing’s Davide Giugliano, Sykes’ teammate, Loris Baz, and Melandri’s teammate, Chaz Davies, were knocked out of contention at the end of the second session.

Unlike previous the previous testing days at the Australian circuit, none of the riders went down and the weather remained a warm 78-degrees Fahrenheit.
