Rossi led the pack for much of the day, finding a new set-up amenable to his riding style. He cut nearly 10 seconds off his best effort on Day 1.
“Today’s test session was very positive for us,” said Rossi. “I’m so happy, especially because we used a different style of setting. It is very important for us to understand this setting, which can help and affect my riding style to ride the bike in a better way and stay more constant, especially with good lap times on old tires.
“To make the first position with a time of 39.5 is good and also being as fast as Jorge. Me and my team are very happy with the pace and I think we will try to continue to work on this way.”
Lorenzo focused on his electronics and suspension settings during Day 2. He struggled at points in the corners with lack of grip and a feeling of instability on the bike, but was pleased overall with his performance. Crutchlow gained speed throughout the day and was happy to have maintained a consistent pace throughout the session.
Dani Pedrosa didn’t get to run through his entire program of testing on Day 2 at Jerez, but he posted the fourth-fastest time nonetheless.
Pedrosa focused on dialing-in his rear shock and electronics, but was unable to complete his full scheduled program of testing once the rains began to fall again.
“Today we were lucky enough to be able to complete some dry laps which was important, even though the track was quite dirty,” said Pedrosa. “We reconfirmed some things from the other tests here at a different track, nothing really new. Unfortunately we were not able to complete the whole program before the rain came again but happy that we did some laps.”
Factory Ducati rider, Andrea Dovizioso, trailed Pedrosa by a slight margin in fifth. Dovi, and his teammate, Nicky Hayden, focused on improving the weight distribution on their GP13s, an area they devoted significant attention to during previous testing at Sepang.
“Looking at the result, you could certainly say the gap of seven tenths isn’t bad, but you can’t really refer to the times because it will probably be dry tomorrow and the track will be faster,” said Dovizioso. “Today we did a number of tests with the setup, and I’m curious to see what we can do tomorrow. Anyway, there are a number of aspects we have to work on because we’re still behind.”
Go & Fun Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista posted the sixth-fastest time, followed by Pedrosa’s teammate, Marc Marquez, in seventh.
LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl came in eighth, followed by Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone in ninth and Hayden in 10th. Iannone posted times within the top-five early in the session, but went down after 15 laps and lost valuable track time recovering from the incident. Hayden was in position to test a new tire late in the day, but the late rains kept him from pushing for a better lap time.
Avintia Blusens’ Hector Barbera was the fastest CRT rider in 11th, followed by Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, in 12th. Smith got a welcome opportunity during the session when he found himself in pursuit of Rossi, allowing him to mimic the Doctor’s lines and style on the M1.
“We tried some set-up modifications to get an idea about my feedback and at that point we realized that we were going in the wrong direction and just as we came back to what I liked it started raining and that was a shame,” said Smith. “I still need to improve a lot but the gap to the first six is not as big as Sepang and that is a positive. I followed Valentino for a short time today and it was a very interesting experience. I could pick up some things about riding technique and I could understand that I need to be a little smoother.”
The final day of testing is set for Monday March 25th.
