Our resident road warrior has earned his stripes covering the rally circuit, from riding the Black Hills of Sturgis to cruising Main Street in Daytona Beach. Whether it's chopped, bobbed, or bored, metric to 'Merican, he rides 'em all.

Clint Ewing Tunnel of Fire
It will be motorcycle daredevils Clint Ewing (above) vs. Toby Baker (below) on Daredevil Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground in Sturgis as the two race head-to-head attempting to break the Guinness World Record for riding a motorcycle through the tunnel of fire.
Toby Baker Tunnel of Fire

Action at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip is about to get hot. 2900-degrees hot, in fact. That’s what temperature it reportedly will be inside the “Tunnel of Fire” daredevil and stuntman Toby Baker will be riding through as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record for riding a motorcycle through a tunnel of fire. Baker has about a ten-second window of opportunity before all hell will come crashing down around him. Hopefully by that time he will have broken the record of 230-feet and be out of the tunnel safely, but the stunt has claimed lives in the past. And he’s not the only mad man pushing motorcycle stunt riding to the extreme at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on August 7 at what is being touted as “Daredevil Wednesday.”

Because Baker won’t be the only lunatic attempting to break the record. In fact, daredevil Clint Ewing will be going head-to-head against Baker as the two square off against each other, attempting to break the record at the same time. Talk about nuts. Ewing actually broke the record in 2008 in front of a national TV audience, riding 200 feet through a tunnel of fire himself. His record was then broken by an Australian stunt man who set the mark at 230 feet that Ewing and Baker are aiming to outdo. On “Daredevil Wednesday,” each one will submit a sealed envelope to the Buffalo Chip’s Rod “Woody” Woodruff with the distance each would like to attempt, so neither knows how far the other is going to set the bar. After that, they’ll set up the tunnels according to the rider’s specs and then it will be time to light it up. Literally.

If that wasn’t enough, while Baker is blasting through the tunnel of fire, his partner in two-wheeled shenanigans, Isaac “Factory” Faine, will be jumping across the same tunnel of fire. “Factory” Faine is scheduled to attempt to break a few records of his own, including nose wheelies through walls of fire and jumping through walls of fire on a motorcycle. When the duo isn’t playing with combustibles, they’ll be performing other acts of hooliganism as they stunt and jump around the Buffalo Chip Campground throughout the week. Looks like the folks at the Guinness Book of World Records are going to be busy hangin’ out at The Chip that week.

Clint Ewing Tunnel of Fire at the Chip
It’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight during The Chip’s Daredevil Wednesday.

If that sounds crazy, try this on for size. One wheel. No brakes. No steering. All strapped to a motorcycle engine. That’s right, it’s what they call the Unimotorcycle Drag Races and they’ll be going on daily at The Chip. Not only that, but they’ll be attempting a world record run on “Daredevil Wednesday” at 5 p.m. out at the free access area of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip called The CrossRoads. The idea to create a one-wheeled motorcycle was spawned by William “Sidecar Willy” Nassau during a night of drinking with his buddy Bubba. Imagine that, beer drinking and backyard ingenuity. The two have a tendency to go hand-in-hand. The Chip says that “After expressing that he had raced everything on two wheels, three wheels and four wheels, Nassau voiced concern that he needed a new challenge and jokingly the unimotorcycle was drawn on a beer coaster. After laughing about the idea, “Sidecar Willy” took the coaster home and the next day started rummaging around his used motorcycle parts. After multiple failed test runs and one painful bruised face later, “Sidecar Willy” came up with a design.” The current world record is held by Russia’s Roman Koltakov, so the American contingency of Unimotorcycle Drag Racers is hoping to bring the record home to America where the sport was spawned and do so in front of an appreciative Chip crowd.

Another extraordinary feat will be attempted the day before “Daredevil Wednesday” when “Mad” Mike Hughes will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the longest and highest jump from a ramp onboard his X-2 Skylimo

Mike Hughes Skycycle
Mike Hughes will attempt to do what Evil Knievel couldn’t. But first he’s going to do a test jump in his X-2 Skylimo from a ramp at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip this summer.
Buffalo Chip Daredevil Day
Calling All Daredevils! The Sturgis Buffalo Chip wants you!

Rocket. Remember Evel Knievel’s failed attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon in the X-2 Skycycle? Well, Hughes has his sights on accomplishing what Knievel couldn’t. But first he’s going to do a test launch at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on Tuesday, August 6. He will do so in a 15.5-foot-long rocket with a claimed 4000 pounds of thrust. Hughes believes he will hit a speed of 275 mph and easily travel about a quarter-mile with no throttle or guidance system before parachutes deploy and escort him safely to the ground.

And just when you think you’ve seen it all at The Chip, you haven’t . Woody and the crew are putting out a nationwide call to all daredevils for this momentous day. They’re looking for over-the-top acts to include in their first death-defying “Daredevil Wednesday.” The Sturgis Buffalo Chip is “Calling All Daredevils,” so if you think you’ve got an act that fits right in with the zaniness that’s already going on, step up by applying here. Patch Milligilicutty of Daredevils Unlimited/American Hellriders already has as he’ll be attempting to break the speed record in the “Wall of Death.” McGillicutty will try to reach speeds of over 91 mph in the cylindrical “Wall of Death” while fighting the extreme G-forces it will exert on his body. I can barely watch the performers in the “Wall of Death” without getting dizzy, so can only imagine what it’s got to be like to ride inside of one. Hats off to Mcgillicutty for going big or going home.

All of the acts scheduled for “Daredevil Wednesday” will take place at The Chip’s free access area, The CrossRoads, so there’s no excuse to miss out on the fun. If you want to sweeten the pot, be sure to get a ticket for that night’s shows inside the amphitheater because Rob Zombie, Mastodon and Machine Head will be laying down the licks hot and heavy that night. We’ll be there. Will you?
