Kawasaki Racing’s Tom Sykes set the pace in Friday’s World Superbike qualifying session at Donington Park, posting a fast lap over one second quicker than Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea. BMW Motorrad GoldBet’s Marco Melandri came in third-fastest. Wet track conditions and cool temperatures prevailed, though were much improved during the afternoon session compared to the morning’s practice, which saw just five riders take to the track.

Early in the afternoon Rea swapped places at the top of the timesheet with FIXI Crescent Suzuki’s Leon Camier and Aprilia’s Eugene Laverty. Sykes made his first appearance on top 15 minutes into proceedings and was steady there until Althea Racing’s Davide Giugliano scored the fastest lap, albeit briefly. Sykes’ teammate, Loris Baz, ousted Giugliano but was then knocked down the list by Sykes, who led the way for the remainder of the day.

Late in the session Sykes crashed in Turn 4, though he was unharmed. Camier’s teammate, Jules Cluzel, went down in the same spot soon after Sykes, and he too was uninjured.

Laverty’s teammate, Sylvain Guintoli, placed fourth followed by Giugliano in fifth. Camier ended the day with the sixth-fastest time while Red Devils Roma’s Michel Fabrizio scored seventh. Davies placed eighth followed by Laverty in ninth and Baz in 10th.

Rea’s teammate, Leon Haslam, returned to his bike after suffering a broken leg in the opening sessions of Round 3 at Assen. The British rider put up the 14th-fastest time in the session.
