AMA Pro Road Racing at Barber Motorsports Park opened with practice and qualifying sessions for AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, GoPro Daytona SportBike and SuperSport. Conditions were hot at the Alabama track, and the tight, technical circuit put riders to the test as they chased provisional pole position.

AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike

Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes logged the fastest lap in Friday’s AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike qualifying, beating Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas by 0.095 seconds. National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden ended the session third-fastest.

Hayes, Cardenas and Hayden were a cut above the field, becoming the only riders to dip into the 1’26 range early in the session. They were later joined by fourth-place qualifier and teammate to Hayden, Danny Eslick, though the Oklahoma native was unable to move past the number four spot during the session. Hayden was the fastest rider mid-session but his best efforts fell short of Hayes’ later laps. The 2012 SuperBike champion was first to move into the 1’25s, which he did with close to 17 minutes remaining. Cardenas was the only other rider to post a lap in the 1’25 range before the checkered flag.

Hayes’ teammate, Josh Herrin, finished fifth-fastest thanks to his final lap of the day and was followed by Pegram Racing’s Larry Pegram in sixth. KTM/HMC’s Chris Fillmore was bumped down to seventh in the final minutes and’s David Anthony finished eighth. Fillmore’s teammate, Taylor Knapp, was ninth-fastest and Team AMSOIL/Hero’s Aaron Yates rounded out the top-10.
