Blake Baggett went 1-2 at Budds Creek finishing on the top-step overall.
Blake Baggett took his first moto win of the 2013 season in Moto 1 at Budds Creek.

Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Blake Baggett put in a performance reminiscent of many he staged during his campaign for the 2012 250 Nationals title in Moto 1 at Budds Creek, running through the pack late in the race to assume the lead and take the win in the final minutes. The Kawasaki ace crossed the line over four seconds ahead of Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin. Musquin’s teammate, Ken Roczen rounded out the podium in third.

Baggett was back in eighth during the opening laps, trailing a field lead by GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn, who scored the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot Award in his first moto of the 2013 season. Hahn decided to sit out the opening rounds of the 2013 Nationals to address a wrist injury sustained late in the Supercross season. Though he maintained a brief lead in the opening lap, he soon slipped back as Musquin and Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson pushed to the front.

Musquin held strong out front through the majority of the race while Hahn, Anderson and Roczen traded punches in the battle for second-place. Roczen eventually gained the upper hand and was fighting to close in on his teammate, but Baggett was on a tear and as competition wound down he was up to third and on Roczen’s rear tire. In one lap Baggett swept past both KTM riders and was able to hold the lead to the checkers, taking his first moto win of the season.

Anderson ended the day in fourth, followed by Hahn’s teammate, Eli Tomac, in fifth. Tomac was stuck back in the field through the opening laps and had to claw his way through the pack for his top-five placement. Hahn held to sixth followed by MyPlash’s Kyle Cunningham in sixth.

Rookie Adam Cianciarulo of Monster Pro Circuit Kawasaki made his professional debut after being forced to sit out the opening rounds of the season due to illness. The young rider finished in 14th.

Tomac staged a come-from-behind victory of his own in Moto 2, rallying back from outside the top-10 to claim the win by over 10 seconds ahead of Baggett, who finished second. Baggett’s teammate, Darrryn Durham, had his best ride of the year, rounding out the podium in third.

Hahn grabbed the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Holeshot in Moto 2, giving him a total of four points in the championship and the outright lead. Durham was quick off the start too and made his way to the front within the opening turns. Hahn held to second-place for a few minutes, but Baggett was pressuring hard from third, eventually making his way into the runner-up spot within the opening laps.

Tomac, meanwhile, was cutting through the field with precision, getting into third-place with close to 13 minutes remaining in competition. The Honda ace proceeded to demolish a nine second gap to the lead within a few laps, moving past both Kawasaki riders with seeming ease.

Tomac’s teammate, Zach Osborne, put forward some late race heroics of his own, moving past Hahn in the final laps for fourth-place. Hahn ended in fifth followed by Roczen in sixth and Musquin in seventh. Justin Bogle made up the fourth GEICO Honda rider within the top-10, finishing eighth, followed by Cunningham in ninth and Baggett’s teammate, Justin Hill, in 10th.

Baggett earned the overall win with his 1-2 result, followed by Tomac in second and Musquin in third. Roczen retains the overall points lead, keeping a nine point advantage over Tomac in second. Musquin is third in points 11 ahead of Baggett in fourth.
