Suzuki confirmed it would rejoin the MotoGP paddock starting in 2015 the Japanese marque testing at Catalunya following Sundays GP race.
Suzuki tested its new GP machine for the first time at Catalunya during testing, with development rider Randy de Puniet logging a total of 73 laps.

Official MotoGP testing began at Catalunya following Round 6 of the 2013 season, and Yamaha Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo topped the timesheet at the end of the day with a 1’41.904 lap time. The big news on the grid, though, came from Suzuki as the marque tested its new GP bike in Europe for the first time. The Japanese manufacturer also confirmed plans to return to competitive action in the premier-class in 2015.

Suzuki has been hard at work developing the GP bike in Japan, though this was the first time the 1000cc Inline Four posted laps alongside existing machines in the championship. Development rider, Randy de Puniet, logged a total of 73 laps during the test and posted the eighth-fastest time of the day at 1’42.676. For reference, the fastest lap logged in the previous days’ race by Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez was a 1’42.552 and the record-breaking pole lap set by Marquez’s teammate, Dani Pedrosa, was 1’40.893.

Ducati’s Nicky Hayden set the second-fastest time on lap 71 of 73, with a 1’41.955. LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl was third followed by Hayden’s teammate, Andrea Dovizioso, in fourth. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top-five.

Some of the new components tested included a new fuel tank for Lorenzo, a new chassis for Crutchlow and a new swingarm and electronics package for Avintia Blusens’ Hector Barbera, who ended the session in 12th. NGM Mobile Forward Racing worked with a new intake system while Power Electronics Aspar focused on work with new suspension and chassis. Factory Ducati riders and the Pramac Racing team continued comparisons between the current GP13 and the “Lab” bikes the Italian marque is developing.

Lorenzo’s teammate, Valentino Rossi, posted his best lap time mid-way through the day and ended in sixth. Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro was seventh-fastest ahead of De Puniet on the Suzuki while Energy T.I. Pramac Racing’s Andrea Iannone finished in ninth. Crutchlow’s teammate, Bradley Smith, left the test after logging 25 laps for a skin graft operation in Barcelona. The rookie rider posted the 10th-fastest time of the day.
