KTM’s Ryan Dungey was the man to beat at the Southwick sandbox with the Minnesota rider nabbing the overall win courtesy of his 1-2 moto finishes. Second on the day was Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto in front of Bam-Bam Justin Barcia, who finished third overall.

“It’s pretty cool to be the final winner here at Southwick,” said Dungey who’s name will go down in the record books as the last man to claim a win at the Massachusetts track after it being axed from the calendar for ’14. “I grew up watching this place on TV and now I’m racing here. To be able to share this with the fans is awesome. The day was awesome. We made some progress and [took] some little steps forward [in the championship]. We could have done a few things better, but Ryan was riding awesome in that second moto. We have to take things from where they’re at and I’m pumped to get the win.”

After tipping over and having to charge up to fourth place in the first moto Villopoto stayed on two wheels for the duration of Moto 2 netting his ninth race win of the season.

“The first moto was tough,” said Villopoto. “I had to waste a lot of energy to catch back up, but we had a great start in the second moto. I was able to ride really good [early on] and get a gap.”

Justin Barcia was the model of consistency with the factory Honda rider recording a 3-3 finish.
“In the first moto I got caught up in the first turn and had to come back from pretty far back to third,” said Barcia. “This track is so challenging and fast it is hard to charge back up to the front but I was able to do so and finish third. Second moto I got a better start and got in behind both Ryan’s and hung in as long as I could but ended up third. I am happy with another podium but am really looking for that first win. I am bummed that this is the last time we are here. It’s sad to see the track go because I rode here a little as an amateur and its nice to have a sand track that is so much different than everything else we ride.”

Fourth on the day was Australian rider Brett Metcalfe who has returned to racing after over a year of recuperating from a big crash at Glen Helen in ’12.
