Lightning struck at the 91st annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the form of Lightning Motorcycles’ Superbike which beat out all of its gas-powered competitors, a first for the event. The motorcycle was ridden by Carlin Dunne, who was the fastest rider last year as well, albeit on a Ducati Multistrada.
The Ducati Multistrada once again demonstrated its dominance during the 91st annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, winning for the fourth year in a row. Bruno Langlois conquered the 12.42-mile slope with a time of 10:21.323 on his 2013 Ducati Multistrada to capture the victory in the 1205 Class.
But it was Lightning Motorcycles and its Electric Super Bike that thundered up Pikes Peak America’s Mountain faster than any other two-wheeler. Piloted by Carlin Dunne, the same racer who set the course record for bikes on a Ducati Multistrada last year in the 1205 Class with a 9:52.819, was the fastest rider again this year, only this time on a fully electric superbike competing in the Exhibition Powersports class. Lightning set the fastest speeds in practice sessions and Dunne followed that up with a 10:00.694 run to beat out 83 other competitors in the motorcycle class. This marks the first time that an all-electric motorcycle has claimed “fastest motorcycle” laurels over its gas-powered counterparts up Pikes Peak.
Other top finisher’s include Jeffrey Tigert on his 2013 Honda CRF450 who established a new Pikes Peak 450 class record of 10:32.964. The Pikes Peak 250 record also fell with Codie Vasholtz establishing the new mark of 11:24.792. Michael Coburn also etched his name into the record books with a new mark in the Quad Modified class of 11:05.874 aboard his 2013 Walsh 450R.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was started in 1916 by Spenser Penrose to bring attention to the Broadmoor Hotel and the dirt highway he constructed to the summit of the 14,110-foot peak, and now is the second-oldest motorcycle race in the country with competitors spread across eight divisions.
