Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes grabbed his fifth consecutive win in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Race 1 at Mid-Ohio. Hayes’ teammate, Josh Herrin, finished in the runner-up spot ahead of Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas.

Hayes and Herrin ran out front through the opening turns, with Herrin taking the advantage early in the first lap. National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden slotted into third followed by his teammate, Danny Eslick, in fourth and Cardenas in fifth. Hayes didn’t waste any time, making it past Herrin before the end of Lap 1, and Cardenas started his move up the ranks as well, passing Eslick for fourth-place.

Herrin fought hard to keep on Hayes’ rear tire through the initial laps, even riding side-by-side with the Mississippi native through one long right-hander. The effort finally paid off four laps into the race, and Herrin found a line past the defending champion to regain the front. His stint in the lead was short lived though, as two laps later Hayes answered back. This time the pass stuck and Hayes went unchallenged from that point on.

Herrin, meanwhile, found himself on the defense, since Cardenas had moved ahead of Hayden into third-place and was closing in on the number two-spot. The Colombian rider made his move into second just after the halfway point and proceeded keep Herrin at bay as the Yamaha rider tried to answer back. Cardenas was successful in holding Herrin off until the final lap, when the two came out of a corner onto a lapped rider who didn’t have time to move off the race line. Cardenas went wide and ran off track briefly while Herrin stayed on the pavement, allowing him to regain second-place and hold there to the finish.

Hayden remained in fourth for much of the race, but apparent grip issues forced the Suzuki rider to slow in the final laps, allowing a number of riders to move past. Eslick finished the race in fourth, followed by Team Hero’s Geoff May in fifth. May’s teammate, Aaron Yates, battled with his fellow EBR 1190R pilot for a top-five spot, but came up short and finished sixth. HMC/KTM’s Chris Fillmore took seventh followed by Hayden in eighth.

Hayes’ win put him in the points lead for the first time this year, one point ahead of previous leader, Cardenas. Herrin sits third, 10 points adrift of the lead.
