Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas earned his first win since the 2013 season opener at Daytona in AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike in Race 2 at Miller, beating National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden by more than four seconds at the checkers. Monster Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin rounded out the podium.

Perhaps the biggest upset in the race came when Herrin’s teammate and three-time defending SuperBike champion, Josh Hayes, crashed his Yamaha R1 after leading the initial laps. Hayes dropped to the back of the pack, and though he was able to recover and continue racing, he was significantly behind and could only recover to 18th before the finish.

When Hayes crashed, Hayden was running a close second and was able to take the front ahead of Cardenas, who had moved into third ahead of Herrin. Hayden and Cardenas proceeded to leave Herrin behind through the subsequent laps, making for a two-man battle to the final lap for the lead. Cardenas remained right on Hayden’s rear tire until the penultimate lap when he finally made a pass for the front stick. The Colombian was given additional breathing room thanks to Hayden’s disappointing final lap effort, which saw him post his slowest lap time of the contest.

Hayden’s teammate, Danny Eslick, finished fourth followed by Team Hero’s Geoff May in fifth. May’s teammate, Aaron Yates, took sixth and’s David Anthonly scored seventh.

Hayes’ misfortune cost him the points lead, and he’s now down in third-place behind Herrin, the new class leader, and Cardenas. Hayes is 16 points adrift of his teammate and will have to run flawlessly through the remaining three races of the season to have a chance at a fourth consecutive title.
