Monster Graves Yamaha’s Josh Herrin scored the AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike Race 1 win at New Jersey Motorsports Park. National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden finished in second-place followed by Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas in third.

Noticeably absent from the podium is Herrin’s teammate Josh Hayes, who fell well outside the top-10 during the opening lap, was penalized five seconds with a jump start and who eventually fought his way through the ranks to finish fourth. Cardenas and Hayden led the way from the beginning as Herrin, too, was back in 16th after Lap 1. Herrin and Hayes fell victim to early mechanical issues which forced both riders to restart their machines during the initial lap. After righting the issue, both Monster Energy Graves riders fought through the field during the initial laps and it appeared doubtful that either would be able to recover to podium position until Neyra Racing’s Huntley Nash had a big engine failure that left oil on track, forcing officials to red-flag the race.

A long delay ensued while the track was cleaned and the race was reduced by three laps. Once back on track Herrin, who lined up outside the top-five for the restart, immediately moved through the pack to the front. He and Cardenas swapped position a number of times in the battle for the lead while Hayden held steady in third. Hayes, meanwhile, was still trying to make up time and near the end even led one lap, but his deficit proved too great and he finished just over three seconds adrift of Herrin in adjusted time. Hayden made a final lap move past Cardenas for the runner-up position.

“It was awesome — it really couldn’t have gone any better,” said Herrin. “We got really lucky with the red flag. We had to start tenth, and something was up with the bike. I haven’t used the R1 without launch control since I’ve been on it — not even a practice start. But we had to on the restart and it went great, so I may just take the launch control off from now on. We went from tenth to first on the first lap, so it was pretty awesome.”

KTM/HMC’s Chris Fillmore finished fifth followed by Hayden’s teammate, Danny Eslick, in sixth. Team AMSOIL/Hero’s Aaron Yates took seventh while Fillmore’s teammate, Taylor Knapp, crossed the line in eighth.

Herrin strengthened his position as points leader after the unusual race; he’s 19 points ahead of Cardenas heading into Sunday’s event and 28 points ahead of Hayes, who sits third.
