Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes made up for a disappointing AMA Pro National Guard Superbike Race 1 to win Race 2 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. His teammate, Josh Herrin, finished in second-place. Yoshimura Suzuki’s Martin Cardenas trailed close behind in third, crossing the line 0.055 seconds behind Herrin.

Hayes returned to form after three consecutive races which saw the Mississippi native off the top step. The defending SuperBike champion ran out front off the start ahead of Cardenas and Herrin while National Guard Jordan Suzuki’s Roger Hayden slipped into fourth-place ahead of his teammate, Danny Eslick. Within the opening laps, Herrin moved past Cardenas into second-place and proceeded to pressure Hayes for the lead. The two Graves Yamaha riders built a slight gap on the field through the subsequent laps while Cardenas fought to defend his position in third-place from Hayden and Eslick.

Cardenas slipped out of podium position during the initial stages of race, but was able to fight back and not only regain third but close the gap on Herrin to come within sight of second-place. Hayden successfully held off Eslick through the later portion of the competition to finish in fourth.

KTM/HMC Racing’s Chris Fillmore trailed Eslick in sixth followed by Team Hero’s Geoff May in seventh. Pegram Racing’s Larry Pegram took eighth and Fillmore’s teammate, Taylor Knapp, finished in ninth.

With only one race left on schedule, the 2013 SuperBike title is now Herrin’s to lose. Herrin retains the overall lead and is 22 points ahead of Hayes, who is now in second-place. Even if Hayes were to win the finale at Laguna Seca, Herrin would still retain the title with a top-10 finish. Cardenas drops to third, now one point behind Hayes.
