Erik Buell Racing stole the show when it dropped its new 1190RX from the ceiling on the opening day of the trade portion of the Expo. The 1190cc V-Twin pumps out a claimed 185 horsepower and gets an average of 40 mpg. It has 426 newly developed parts and comes with a 21-level traction control system, a first for an EBR motorcycle. It’s also priced well below the previous 1190RS, with an MSRP of $18,995. In conjunction with the EBR news, Shorai announced a new lithium battery which will be the standard in all 1190RX motorcycles on dealer floors.
Later in the afternoon EBR drew crowds again when it joined with its partner, Hero MotoCorp, to announce that Hero motorcycles would hit US markets by mid-2014. Consumers in the States can expect to see four models, three motorcycles and one scooter, which are likely to be very, very competitively priced.
Suzuki had a large presence at the AIMExpo as well, using the weekend to introduce its new GW250, V-Strom 1000 and Burgman 200. All three bikes were on display in the Suzuki area and press was given the chance to test the GW and Burgman in the days prior to the show’s opening. Suzuki finally revealed its pricing for the 2013 GW250 at $3999 (expect the GW250 First Ride review soon).
Yamaha was also on hand, displaying its new FZ-09 and utilizing the event to announce the winner of the Star Bolt Custom Build-Off.
AIMExpo’s “Champion” Kenny Roberts opened the trade portion by riding an FZ-09 on stage and talking briefly about his time in MotoGP. Once the consumer portion opened on Friday, Roberts returned to chat with fans about his racing past and his present projects.
Later on Friday “American Pickers” star Frank Fritz came to the AIMExpo stage to talk about his new book, “How to Pick Vintage Motorcycles.” He also chatted about his lifetime love of motorcycles, answered questions from the audience about the show and displayed three vintage rides from his personal collection, two vintage Harley-Davidsons and a 70’s era Honda chopper. (Stay tuned for an Interview with Fritz on MotoUSA.)
