The 2014 model represents a full redesign for the V-Strom platform. It sources a larger 1037cc version of its 90-degree V-Twin, which claims 99.2 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque. Further changes to its powertrain include a lighter exhaust and new clutch with slipper and assist functionality. The new mount also showcases Suzuki’s first-ever production traction control system, with ABS a standard feature.
Chassis changes include a new twin-spar aluminum frame, which further drops weight to a claimed 502 pounds – 18 less than its predecessor. The front suspension swaps out the non-adjustable Showa fork for a 43mm inverted Kayaba unit adjustable for rebound, compression and preload. Brakes are updated too, with radial-mount four-piston Tokico monoblocs up front.
Styling is completely updated, with new instrumentation and ergonomic enhancements too. For a more detailed analysis of the new Strom – read Closer Look at the 2014 Suzuki V-Strom 1000.
The Adventure model benefits from standard accessories to enhance touring performance with saddlebags, a touring windscreen and hand guards. Off-road durability is beefed up by a crash bar and aluminum skidplate. The Adventure model will come in Glass Sparkle Black as standard, though Suzuki will allow dealers to incorporate the Adventure package on the Candy Daring Red and Glass Desert Khaki colorways if so inclined.
Aggressive pricing for the new V-Strom 1000 undercuts all of its 1200cc rivals in the Adventure-Touring market by at least $2000. In fact, the base model is priced less than BMW’s F800GS by $200.
